We all know we suck on the road and have for... basically ever.

What would you do as a coach or player differently to change it up?

I’d full court press more on the road, try to get some energy from the tip. Maybe use Miller and mag when healthy more in situations like this.
This is interesting. I like Mag starting or being first off the bench if energy is a concern. It shouldn't be but sadly it often is.

Even a half court press at times to switch up momentum and get players thinking of pressure could help

Have Ron and Geo make their shots early.

We did beat Minnesota on the road in a big victory and I think Purdue the year before.
I like Ron in the post early with some of those sets we have seen that specifically schemed for it off movement vs just a regular NBA style post iso

Or Ron curling off a screen going to his right to get to the rim

The RAC’s rims are the loosest I’ve ever seen in a gym. Every gym we play in other than the RAC has normal rims. I think this hurts us on the road since we can’t shoot.

Besides hitting shots ( tougher on road) , you have to fo something different if what you are doing consistently isn’t working. Pressing forces them to have more energy one wag or another. Of course hon have to make some shots to get into your press

I didn't see an energy problem early. I saw a problem taking early shots and not working hard on offense. Effort became an issue as the game wore on,

the Purdue game was a very strong effort by both schools. Minnesota, not so much, they were on a big losing skid and not playing well and RU was seemingly in control early before inexplicably taking the air out of the ball and only heroics by JY saved the day and our NCAA bid

I think taking jumpers isnt really our best play on the road, yet we seem to do it all the time, you could tell early on we were not in sync. We need to run set plays for Cliff or Paul or Caleb on our first 3 or 4 possessions

Do we have set plays for Caleb and Paul? And if so, why?

14 minute mark is 6-4. We held PSU to 6 points in the 1st 10-11 possessions. I dont think it was PSU missing shots, I think we defended pretty good. Offensively we didn't make shots and didnt take good shots and didnt use our offensive sets like we have the past 4 games. At the 10 minute mark it was all of a sudden 18-6. They scored 12 points in 4 ninutes

At 12 minute mark at 10-4 we take out Geo, Harper and Cliff and put in MIller, Hyatt and Dean. PSU scores 7 points in the next 3 possessions. THIS IS WHERE THE GAME CHANGED

because you just cannot make wholesale changes like that and a hideous lineup and expect to compete. Pike claims and its laughable that his bench is as good as his starters..imagine a lineup with Paul, Miller, Hyatt, Dean, was Caleb the other guy or was it Palm..thats not going to get it done,

Pike does seem to use some questionable lineups and subbing patterns. He likes the hockey style line change type subs where he brings in 3 or so new players at once

I always wonder how much psychology goes into it when you gain a reputation for an amazing home court atmosphere. For example, Rutgers and IU have knocked off some great teams in their raucous gyms over the last few years, while struggling on the road; it’s possible their players start to subconsciously play looser and with more energy at home, thinking they can take anyone, and come out as a literally different team on the road.

Someone said it earlier and going full court press should be something Pike considers at Penn State. Our shooting in that building over the last 4 years is horrendous and last night’s Geo 3-12 , Ron’s 2-9 , Caleb and Paul ‘s 2-6 and Aundre 1-7 was further proof. Yeah Penn State stayed in front of us but we just missed easy shots and never attacked the basket. Full court press would change the game to more uptempo and to our favor compared to the half court game with Penn State using 20-25 seconds or more on their possessions . Maybe up tempo and an easy basket gets our guys going and shooting better once they see one go in. But to not attack in the half court sets and settle for jump shots , when it was obvious 6 minutes in , that they were not going down , was not the right strategy. Then to allow Penn State to run the same 1 play , high post ball screen with Sessoms , for the last 10 minutes and never adjust or switch out of man , was also very bad strategy. The players were bad and settled and never attacked with any intensity but the coaches did nothing last night and that sucks because I love Pike and he didn’t help his team last night .

You are on to something. Pike has to invest in a psychiatrist because it is all mental and has been that way for years. With the occasional Minnesota , Iowa or Purdue games to win to improve our NCAA selection , where the intensity gets ratcheted up , most of the time they are passive , do not attack , hardly go to the line , and let their bad offense affect their turnovers and defense. The players need the mental help because it is not physical. There are games at home that we would beat any team in the country with the way we have played , not just this year, but going back a couple in 2019-20, where we beat Seton Hall, Illinois and Maryland , all top ranked or close to ranked teams , and we were up 20-25 points in the second half. How not even an ounce of that play or effort translates to the road is mind numbing. Only a shrink can figure it out.

Sports psychologist. Psychiatry is a medical field.

THIS!!!! And if we have one, then they are not effective and we need a new one. This is especially true, if they are the sports psychologist across multiple sports for awhile now. Now I’m proud of our teams for getting so far at times and improving, but so many times, we are right on the cusp on something great before losing the big game that gets us over a major milestone.

Don't need a shrink. Not too complicated. They need to get their heads out of their asses, focus & come out playing like mad dogs. On the road is irrelevant.

I wish you were right but the last few years of road games tell a different story. It is almost impossible ( not impossible because it happened last night ) to have 2 back to back games like we just witnessed against Nebraska and Penn State and the extreme differences.

I'm saying they need to play the way I described at home or on the road. It doesn't matter where they're playing.

Can’t say I’m an expert coach but I would attack the basket to start in road games. Get the jitters and nerves out in the beginning with physical and aggressive play - nothing more unsettling than having geo Ron and Caleb brick the first three shots from midrange yesterday. Those will come after we attack the basket and force defenders to sag off

Maybe you should send all of this input to Pike, since he's got no clue how to turn it around. Who would have thought that a message board post would talk about how to turn things around, because obviously ***** doesn't really believe Pike knows how to. ***** you're starting to realize the obvious.... you're coming around my brother.

Pikes hyped recruit.... But you can't make truthful and candid comments on this board about Pike because he's such a nice guy. Or you will be attacked by his Kool-Aid drinking mob.

Hey, hey, hey....you can't criticize Pike on this board...please stop because so many here think he's such a nice guy. And anyone that criticizes Pike will be attacked mercilessly by his Kool-Aid drinking mob.

And Pike takes no responsibility for that, only the teen and very early 20's players do because Pikes a nice guy, so why criticize him according to the majority of Kool Aid drinkers on this board. Hey he got us to the first NCAA tournament since 91.....wow!!!! These clowns are about criticizing the 2&3 star players who Rutgers was their best offer, but never the coach who signed them and is also the current coach.

Good for you for telling the truth, which these Kool-Aid drinking Pike lovers

Yawn

Agree... All the Kool-Aid drinking people on this board who refuse to call a spade a spade and criticize the leader of this program... Pike.

98% of posts are him talking to himself with endless ranting about how you can't criticize Pike. I've never seen someone so obsessed with killing a straw man.

I've blocked 0 people ever but he is under consideration. You can not be a Pike fan. Discuss why in a way that brings value. He says nothing of substance ever and just clogs the board

This is one strategy and I agree. I didn’t watch PSU but against Nebraska Ron didn’t go off early. We shared the ball and everyone was scoring. PM and Geo really did a great job finding the open players which makes shooting a hell of a lot easier. Paul hit a couple of 3’s before Nebraska and then an early one against Nebraska which forced them to defend him. I realize it was a home game but it wasn’t all about Harper being hot or not. It was a total team effort which is what we need to be successful.
