Tom Young was an excellent coach and a great person. It was a privilege to be a manager for him for my 4 years at Rutgers in the late 70's.

Even though we hadn't seen him much the last few years, it was always nice to talk to him when he did come back.

My thoughts and prayers are with the whole Young family and for all of us that knew him.

Rest in Peace Coach,
Mark

When Young left for Old Dominion I began to understand that Rutgers wasn't as interested in competing at the top level as I was in seeing them do so.

Short video of Tom Young and Joe Boylan when the 1975-76 basketball team was celebrated at the RAC on January 9, 2016. Sadly, they have both passed. RIP Tom and Joe. Two gentlemen!

Loved his style of play. Match ups vs arch nemesis Princeton and Pete Carril were classics. College hoops at its best. RIP,Coach.

RIP. I never met him but I knew his son through a mutual friend. He was one year ahead of me at Rutgers. His son was funny as hell and a blast to be around but oh boy was he a wild character!

Loved going to the RAC during my undergrad years with some good teams, especially that '83 team, my junior year, that won in the first round of the NCAAs. Loved Hinson, Battle, Black, Ellerbe, Brunson, Tillman, Remley and the rest - thought they could've gone further. RIP Tom and thanks for the memories.

sad news nonetheless

Sorry, I have been bed ridden for several days.
Today my daugter brings in
the Home News Tribune. And it is a major
headline story. Shows how bad that paper is now.

There should be a special recognition area for Tom Young in a future Hall of Fame section in a renovated RAC.

RIP Coach. He changed me from a casual Rutgers sports fan in 1975 to a diehard that I've been for the last 47 years.

This one is for the old-time fans, like me. Rich Brunson talks about Coach Young and tells some great stories. Near the end of the video, there's a spot where Brunson is being interviewed by Fred White following RU's win over Southwest Louisiana in 1983. White was also the play-by-play announcer for RU's win over Penn State in the A-10 title game at the RAC in 1989. Quite a coincidence that White worked arguably the two biggest Rutgers wins of the 80s.

Mike,

Thanks for posting that. Rich was and is a good guy and was a real good player. He was a freshman when I was a senior and we always got along real well.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Rich was a good player but had one of the biggest missed dunks in Rutgers history at MSG. I honestly cannot remember who it was against but remember it prevented us from beating a blue blood

Louisville at MSG.

Louisville, ranked No. 7, went into a 7-minute stall in the second half. College hoops was a different game 40 years ago.

Thanks for the life of me I could not remember the opponent, but I remember playing a great game and that missed break away dunk was the turning point. It would have been a great win. Between Myles and Brunson those were two huge missed dunks

Missed Bailey dunk went to half court in a 1 point loss to UNLV. I think it was at Spectrum 89-88. 1976-77. IIRC
Larry, over the years, I have spoken to many fans from days gone by, and a good portion of them have said, in regards to pure excitement and fun to watch, this game ranks among the best in program history.

That was a painful loss ….and it STILL bugs me that we basically let them kill the last 8 minutes of the game with a 2 point lead ….
Sticks in my craw, too... was also the game that convinced me a shot clock was needed in the college game. The end-of-game stall ruined a highly entertaining game.

Less bitter because we beat than at the RAC, following. How are you Mike? Hosting the family is ok and base it through covid unscathed.

Thankfully, family made it through the pandemic unscathed, but Covid was not so kind to a friend, claiming his life at only 51, and the elderly parents of a few friends.

It was about 5 degrees outside the Spectrum that day with the wind chill.

Best of Luck,

I an glad for the former, but sorry for the latter. Condolences on your losses. We made it through, but similarly lost others' family and friends.
