Before his shoulder injury, from which he was never the same, Driscoll was the superior QB. That's why he won the job to start the 1994 season. It was the days before online recruiting services, so a lot of folks probably don't remember, but coming out of Linn-Mar, Driscoll was one of the top-rated high school QBs in the country. Those 1989 and 1990 Linn-Mar teams were great!

Sherman looked much more comfortable in the pocket and was the better QB. Driscoll threw off his back foot A LOT

This. Sherman was more fundamentally sound. As also evidenced by his much better touchdown to interception ratio. Not to mention Driscoll being a bit of a head case, like the aforementioned refusal to sub in.

Could be. It makes you wonder what Fry and his coaches saw in choosing Driscoll as the 1994 starter?

Driscoll had two years in the system to Sherman's one, so seniority probably. They both played in the opener against CMU and Sherman had all the buzz coming out of that one. But Sherman broke his foot and by the time he came back against Purdue to rally Iowa to a tie (the last one we ever had!), Driscoll was out for the year. Sherman won the final two starts and then first five the following year before the schedule got really tough. Was the Illinois game where Sherman threw four or five picks the same game Driscoll refused to go in? Can't recall for sure.
