If I remember correctly, he also wrote for Motor Trend/Car and Driver. perhaps as a guest editor.

O'Rourke wrote for Car and Driver from the mid-70s to mid 80s and moved over to the now-defunct Automobile when it began in 1986. The play on Descartes seems to have originated at Automobile, though I haven't seen it ascribed to any particular writer.
