Saw on Twitter that Lucky Town had ceased brewing beer. Sad day, they are good MSU folks and I enjoyed there beer very much. You guys need to drink more beer!

Wouldn't surprise me if they reopened in a different location. They struggled

with Jackson's infrastructure issues I heard.

The amount of craft breweries has more than doubled, and almost tripled, in the US over the last 4 years and the amount of shelf space in stores has stayed the same. That’s not a good recipe no matter how good or bad the beer is, and I thought they had a few decent ones.

That sucks, we need a local brewery to go "Viral"

Unfortunately I agree with fishh2o, their beer is just not good. I'll buy a 6 pack just to try and support them but I never finish it.

I liked their Ballistic Blonde and their Pale Ale, I tried their Sour last week at Anthony's and while it wasn't for your Bud Light crowd, it was a pretty good after dinner beer.

Really sad news. I usually go to Lucky Town about once a month or two. The tap room will be open until March 9. Gose Gamblin' (the sour you mentioned) is their best beer as far as I'm concerned. Hot Coffee-- a close second. I plan to make some appearances there until then...

Have you tried any of 1817's beer? Couple of local guys started it in Okolona. Loved their Oktoberfest and they had a Mango something or other back during the summer that was excellent. They are only draft right now but it is available at several Starkville restaurants, Bulldog Burger, Camphouse, to name a couple.

Their Pub Ale is horrible and I am not really a fan of any of there beers, it's been 1.5 years since I have tried one, but I doubt they got any better.

This is what happens when homebrewers think they can make it in the commercial market.
If you want to make good beer, then hire a good experienced Brewmaster to make your beer, don't do it yourself.

Not only have they exploded, they exploded when credit was relatively cheap and relatively easy to get. I suspect as interest rates go up you'll a lot of well capitalized breweries solidify their position and a lot of newer breweries reliant on credit go under, even if they sell relatively good beer.

Is this true though? I thought the recent tax law had some provisions to help out breweries? I'm sure it was just mismanagement on the part of the brewery.

DAMNNN!!! The only beer I've never been able to finish, and I mean one single beer, is Milwaukee's Best.

I have not. I rarely have gotten a chance to be in North Mississippi for an extended weekend the past few years. I've only had a couple of Mayhew Junction's beers and have not had any Yalobusha beers since they converted to the brewpub format.

Schaefer's, for me. Goodness that was bad stuff. I think it was like 8 bucks a 24 pack circa 2004 at the Chevron at Hwy 12 and Montgomery. Good for giving to the other team in beer pong...

Domestic beer in MS takes up over 80% of the market share leaving the rest to be split with crafts, imports and the mikes lemonades of the world.

Schaefer's was my go to when I was in college. Circa 1985 you could catch it on sale for 2.99 a case if I remember correctly. Mixed in a little Old Style and Black Label when I had an extra 50 cents to blow.

Chandelour on the coast is brewing some good beer and if you are in Gulf Shores/ OBA, Big Beach has excellent beers.

I was not intending to imply that Lucky Town went under because credit got more expensive. Credit hasn't gotten expensive yet to my knowledge unless lenders have become concerned about lending to craft breweries specifically. I was just pointing out that most of these have never operated with anything other than historically cheap credit, and as it gets more expensive, you'll probably see a lot of them aren't prepared for it.

Not true at all. There have been 4-5 craft beer specialty stores that have opened within 10-15 min of my house just within the past 5 years. And none of them sell Bud Light.

lots of folks with a taste for cheap beer. Part of living in an impoverished, conservative state. People couldn't get higher grade craft beer for along time. So they got used to drinking something else. A lot of Mississippians won't spend what it cost on regular basis to buy craft beer. I'm not one of them. I would rather pay and drink craft if I'm drinking beer. Yazoo, Lazy Magnolia, Abita, New Belgium, and others. Lucky town was ok. It wasn't my favorite. I hope we get several more breweries in MS. I was glad when they upgraded the alcohol content that allowed for more brews to be made and sold in the state. I was also glad they allowed for the sale of alcohol on their grounds of breweries. I just hope the breweries can keep up and garner enough interest. I definitely the 20% of other will grow as craft beers become more available and more people start drinking them and get used to them. Now, if only we could do something about pesky dry counties..

Bit of a thread hijack, but since it’s changes to beer generally, what’s the deal with that Starkville brewery? Last I knew, they were still distributing in Starkville (or at least I think I drank one of their beers at a restaurant last football season) but they used to also be open to the public periodically, especially during football weekends, but I haven’t seen anything saying they were for the past couple years. As I recall, their main beer wasn’t that great, but they had a lot of variety at their taproom, some of which were pretty good.

Edit: Mayhew Junction was the brewery I was trying to remember.

Were they the only brewery in Jackson? According to Wikipedia they are, and that doesn't sound right.

Go work for Parrish Brewing in Broussard. Lucky Town was simply not ready and begging for local support for clearly ****** beer is BS.

That 'may' be true in Mississippi BUT it's NOT here in Virginia. Three new brewery's and two distilleries have just opened locally and a huge new brewery featuring live music and an internal taco stand will open this spring. Richmond, Ashville, and others are also exploding! Beer sales are increasing everywhere! Publix grocery just added another craft beer isle.

Forgot to mentio that Premium Outlet Mall just added a craft brewery! Have volunteered to drive the wife .. anytime.

I'm boycotting SOPRO until they bring back Jack the Sipper.

I keep wishing they’d bring back the Hipster Breakfast Stout, but am unwilling to stop drinking Devil’s Harvest or some of the barrel aged stuff they do. The crowd control is also very good.

I loved Hipster Breakfast. That might have been the first beer I rated 5 stars on Untappd.

Barrel aged beer is overrated— I’ve had one - maybe two - barrel-aged beers that were better than the original version (out of, say, 10?)

The owners of Mayhew Junction are friends of mine. I don't think their intent was ever to run a taproom full time (they both work for the university), but when they opened that was kind of what the laws dictated in order to get their beer out there. Plus, they've had a few other things going on including job stuff and being parents to a toddler. They mainly want to brew and distribute beer in the area, so their beers are on tap in restaurants/bars all over the Golden Triangle. Their distributor has tried to expand that, but they can only do what they can do as it's just the 2 of them running the show. I'm pretty sure they're dabbling with barrel aged beer now, so be on the lookout for that. It may be a while though, bc that is the nature of that kind of beer.

My husband owns a very small brewery in Austin TX, and he's done collaboration beers with MJ in both Starkville and Austin. The Starkville version might be ready sometime later this year.
