Lou was then basically pushed out after hitting 100 wins as the strong ND alumni didn't want him to break Knute's win record.

So, Marcus Freeman, who has 40 wins over 4 years, averaging 10 wins a year, should be close to that milestone in 2030/2031.

one of his better stories was, he was coaching DB's at OSU and they were playing USC and OJ. He said at half time, Woody came over, put his hands around his neck, and asked, why did OJ Simpson just go 80 yds for a TD? Lous response was, 'cause thats all he needed Coach' !

Another one. One of his teams were playing at Navy where the upper level boards have the names of famous naval battles like Tripoli, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima etc. During the pre-game warm-ups one of his players came over to him and said "Coach, we can't possibly win". When Lou berated him and asked why. The guy said "Look at the schedule they play"

Well, regarding Lou and the wins issue... Kelly actually eventually surpassed Knute's record. As my Dad explained it to me, by the time Kelly came around there was a different generational make-up of the influential ND alumni/boosters. Knute's record really didn't matter as much in 2020 vs 25 years earlier. As for CMC, i think he's either here 3 years or 10+

My father worked with Lou's brother-in-law Dan who was a very good football player growing up in eastern Ohio. Every year my dad would drive from Bucks County with Danny for a Notre Dame home game where they had sideline passes. And every year he would regale me with stories of Lou, and make my brothers and I watch a video of one of ours speeches to the ND quarterback club. He completely ignored that fact that five of the six of us went to Penn State and were JoePa fans.

There was an old joke about Lou and Joe. It was from the 1980s and was set well into the future. It goes like this.

Lou passed and met St. Peter at the Golden Gates. Peter chastized Lou for all the lies he told recruits and how he abused referees. Peter then gave him credit for coaching Notre Dame and allowed him to enter heaven. An angel escorted Lou to a nice small cottage and Lou was content.

The next day Lou went for a walk and came upon a huge white mansion with blue shutters and other trim. The walkway had two statues of Nittany Lions. And the Penn State fight song was playing on large speakers. Lou went ballistic.

He hurried back to gate and confronted St. Peter. "How does Joe Paterno rate such a beautiful mansion and I only get a small cottage? He then described the mansion."

St. Peter corrected Lou."That's not Joe Paterno's house. That's God's.
