Its only fitting that he passed during a Cards/Cubs series. One franchise thinking thank you very much while the other thinks what might have been.

Hate to hear that.
One of my all time favorite players and definitely one of my Top 3 Cardinals of all time.
Got to see him play in person in June of 1977 in old Busch Stadium against the Pirates.
Cards lost that day 1-9 but I was in heaven as a 11 year old kid.

I saw him against the Padres in 1976

He went 5 for 6, three stolen bases, but struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Also saw him try to turn a triple into an inside-the-park homerun in 1977. Got called out at home plate.

Breaks my heart. Really in many ways represented the good things about the Cardinals. Obviously one of the best base stealers of all time he was really clutch in the postseason too. A big reason why the Cardinals won it all in 64 and 67.

I had a major lump in my throat on opening day of 2019 (I believe that was the year) when her rode in the mustang with his prosthetic leg and joined the other red jackets behind home plate. He had missed the prior opening day I believe as he had just found out about his cancer. I may be off a year on that but I believe those are right.

The Cardinals have several shortcomings that fans of the other 29 teams like to point out but the one thing I believe we do better than anyone is opening day and opening days will be a little less joyful from now sans Sweet Lou. I hope Bob Gibson is doing ok. They found cancer in him a year or 2 ago and I missed the first part of what Danny Mac said the other night during a reds game but it was something to the effect of having Brock and Gibson in your thoughts and prayers. I wonder if they had word that time was getting short for Lou. I hope the same isn't true of Gibby, I wasnt alive to watch him play but of all the hundreds of hours of old video clips I've watched I dont think there was anyone that looked more dominant than he did.

One of my favorite Gibson quotes was told my Tim McCarver. I believe this was in a world series but Bob had gotten into a bit of a jam so McCarver made his way to the mound, only to tell McCarver to get off his mound and back behind home plate as the only thing TM knew about pitching was that he couldnt hit it. McCarver laughed when he said he did as he was told.

Bob Gibson is not doing well either. I believe we will have some sad news on him soon as well.

Lou Brock was a childhood hero for me. I grew up listening to the Cardinals every night on WELO AM out of Tupelo with Mike Shannon & Jack Buck calling the games. We even took family vacations to St Louis to watch baseball for a week several times. Lou was such a class act. He had 3,000 plus career hits & hed the stolen base record for a decade. RIP Lou!
