Way back when, I saw Kenny Rogers and the First Edition at MSU or the W (seems like it was in the Lee Hall auditorium). They played to a packed house. When the group broke up he sort of had to restart his career on his own, and for some time played regularly at the Plush Horse in Huntsville. Seems like the cover charge was $1. Then he eventually made it big time.
I remember Kenny performing at a rodeo in the Coliseum (in Jackson) when I was around 10 years old. It must have been 1977 or 1978.
During the show, Kenny walked around the dirt floor and shook everybody's hand while he sang.
My aunt was a huge Kenny fan, so she got first row tickets and took my sister and me with her.
We shook hands with Kenny as he walked around performing.
Kenny had some really great songs, including "Lucille," which I sometimes loudly sing around the house . . . while my family covers their ears.

He thought he would play the cool superstar, and not sign autographs or shake hands.....
He didn't have another hit for 10 years. For the rest of his life, he always shook hands and signed autographs.
