It feels like you've been on our board for 150 years.
I think what surprised most people when they saw her in person is how short she was. She was only 5 feet tall.
I watched that show live. Anyone know what year it was? I am guessing the eighties. I watched Carson all the time. I can remember when I was in high school the first thing in the morning before class would start my friends and I would discuss what Carson did the night before. I guess I am an old "get off my lawn" Boomer because I never watch any of the talk shows that are now on network TV.
I worked in a nursing home in high school. Some were miserable. Some actually were pretty happy. We have friends who work in an assisted living facility attached to a nearby nursing home. Lot of folks in their 80s to 90s and they have a blast. They play cards and watch TV (a lot of sports) and have their own bar with a happy hour. They had to set a drink limit though after a guy with one of those electric scooters crashed in to a wall and damaged the sheetrock.
Yep - none of the current late night talk shows can compete with Carson.
The night Raquel Welch was on with a cat in her lap. She asked Johnny you want to pet my Pussie . He said move the cat and I will.
People don’t forget that Dolly wrote that song. She won a Grammy for it, I think. It’s just that Whitney’s version was always way more popular because of the movie.
Dolly also made a fortune off of it. Something like $10 million in royalties. She had this to say about it:
"When Whitney did 'I Will Always Love You,' I mean look what a grand song she made out of that simple, heartfelt, you know, song… it was just amazing," Parton has remarked. "Whitney is the one who took it worldwide and really made it a household word — or song, I should say — so I'll always be thankful to her for that."
Also, she used those royalties to invest and support the black community in Nashville.
“I bought my big office complex down in Nashville. So I thought, ‘Well, this is a wonderful place to be,’ “ Parton said. “I bought a property down in what was the Black area of town, and it was mostly just Black families and people that lived around there. It was off the beaten path from 16th Avenue and I thought, ‘Well, I am gonna buy this place — the whole strip mall.’ And I thought, ‘This is the perfect place for me to be,’ considering it was Whitney.”
“I thought this was great — I’m just gonna be down here with her people, who are my people as well,” she continued. “So I just love the fact that I spent that money on a complex and I think, ‘This is the house that Whitney built.’ “
She was indeed a remarkable woman who will be sorely missed.

The world changed. If Carson was Carson right now, very few people would be watching it. In the 80s, we had three or four channels. We did not have a remote control.
Truly an amazing woman that lived an amazing life.
Rarely do people live life like they talk or preach. Dolly was the exception. Even with all her wealth and advantages she acquired, she was the genuine article.
Loved and adored by everyone. She'll be greatly missed.

I wouldn’t. I’d probably be watching YouTube on my phone. Somehow got caught up into an algorithm where guys make insects fight each other. I don’t even know what’s happening anymore.
One of the first talent scouts/record companies she auditioned for wouldn’t sign her and they supposedly said “yeah, but she can’t sing”. They couldn’t see past how beautiful and voluptuous she was.
Not so sure I agree as many people just want to watch funny, non-political late night TV talk shows.
Letterman was great until he started getting political and it was the beginning of the end . Since then it’s almost all political now .
