I love Reba and thought Betty White was great. But I wouldn't put either of them in Dolly's tier.
I will be *very* sad when Carol Burnett passes. It was one of my life goals to meet her but I think the window has closed. She was a super-talent and a beloved star, but I don't think her public service/humanitarianism/charity element is at the same level. And she didn't stay as relevant as long as Dolly.

Tom Hanks is way down the list, in my view. Fine actor, good reputation, but not on the same level.
Denzel is another in that category, in my view. Very well respected and a known "good guy." But not a cross-cultural icon like Dolly.

Bob Hope and his USO work would be up there.

I'm at a loss to think of anyone who could really be in Dolly's category. Didn't weaponize or trade on her politics.

Agree, but Carol Burnett was a good call. Her good buddy Julie Andrews is another on that list of pretty universally beloved entertainers.

Maybe Dick Van Dyke as well.

I saw the convo earlier in this thread that a lot of people didn't Elvis and that's very true but his death was a BIG deal in this country and around the world .

He was a huge star, and his death, partly because he was still pretty young, was shocking, which contributed to the story.

But there’s a level of class (country style class) and excellence and intelligence and goodness that Dolly just exuded. Not at all the same for me.

As more of her private correspondence with others comes out she’s just going to rise in status. She was obviously just a top level human in all the ways that should be most admired.

I think it’s true that she represents a sort of equivalent to the loss of a queen to most Americans. Different than royalty, America’s version of it.

Anyone else's wife make them watch Steel Magnolias last night?

I'm not complaining, of the movies she subjects me to it's probably one of the best. Ironically enough, Rocky Horror is one of the worst. I've never made it completely through. I don't hate it, I just can't really get into it and I love Meat Loaf.

After thinking and reading more about Dolly I realize that she acted just about exactly the way the Preacher tells us every Sunday that God wants us to act (but of course I somehow have messed that up before I even get to my car after church) . She really was special and really will be missed .

No but we did watch the special on NBC. Another sign you're "big time" when a network runs a prime time program on your life and passing. It's been remarkable reading various stories and the comments from my fellow Americans around the internet just how true it is, everybody really did love Dolly.

Can't say I've watched a minute of RH and looking back not sure why. Seems it came out when I was 20, Meat Loaf all over the radio and had reached peak cult status "thing to do" when I was around 25 so might have thought I'd have been into it. 🤷‍♂️

The only other celebrity death in my lifetime that had such a widespread and broad based outpouring of respect was Bob Hope. He was an immigrant by the way.

I play the piano at the Peabody Hotel twice a week. Last night was my first time since Dolly passed. As you can imagine, I got some requests.

Last night I played:
- Here You Come Again (multiple times)
- Jolene
- I Will Always Love You (multiple times)
- Islands in the Stream
- Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man

People from all over come through there. Lots of international folks. Everybody loves Dolly.

Do you promote yourself as Magical Pianist or an Ivory Tickling Magician?

Yup, his mom snuck him across the border from England at Ellis Island.

Raises hand, put me on that list please sir. Thanks!
Elvis had a very big heart and was about as Patriotic as one can get. And he insisted on not avoiding the draft and enlisted. I personally know a lady in north MS who received a new cadillac from Elvis. He ran into her at a local gas station. Didn't know her from Adam. She was driving a pretty old beat up car. He saw it and basically told her that car was on it's last legs. She replied yes, but I can't afford another one, much less a new one. He told her to go down to the Cadillac Dealership and pick her up a new Caddy. She looked at him like he was crazy. He said "seriously", I'll call ahead and have it ready for you. If you want a different model or color, then get it. She started crying and gave him a big hug and then proceeded to the dealership and sure enough, her new ride was there waiting for her. Didn't pay one penny for it and left her old piece of junk with them. Turns out Elvis had done this on many occasions.

Right out of school I worked at a GM dealership my cousin owned in central Mississippi. One day we got an urgent call from the Caddy dealer in Memphis for a black Sedan Deville we had in stock . The dealer was about in a panic and I asked what was the deal , his reply "Elvis wants it to give to a friend" and I said sure Can I Bring it to you LOL...he sent a driver who showed in a few hours. I got the feeling Elvis did this a lot .

Probably a tremendous customer to keep happy. I doubt he haggled over price.
