While not very famous, Clara Jean Ester was a 20-year-old college student, that supported the 1968 Memphis sanitation worker's strike. She attended the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech on April 3 at the Mason Temple, in Memphis Tennessee. The next day, she went to attend a dinner at the Lorraine Motel, where King was staying. She heard the shot that struck Rev. King, and ran to where he lay on the balcony. She saw that King was struggling to breath, and she did what she could to stop the bleeding.
With her passing, it is believed that 94-year-old Andrew Young, an aide at the time to Rev. King, is the last remaining surviving eyewitness to the shooting of Rev. King.
