He owned 2 million acres of land throughout the Midwest. CBS had a good story about him and the properties last year. Definitely worth the 8 minutes to watch it. Talk about winning the family lottery if you are into outdoor activities. What an incredible situation.

I watched so many "edited for content and run time" movies on TBS back in the day that I was constantly confused by storylines. Ted was a visionary though. RIP.

Ted was a bit of a kook and I disagreed strongly with his politics but the SuperStation TBS was an absolute game changer. It is the reason so many people throughout the southeast are Braves fans. It also reacquainted the country with The Andy Griffith Show and other classic TV series. CNN is today is pure garbage but that network he created began the 24 hour news cycle. RIP Ted.

The advent of the 24 hour news cycle (CNN), where news had to invented/sensationalized/exaggerated to fill broadcast hours, is one of the worst things that has happened to America since Vietnam.
I think the abolishment of the news fairness doctrine in 1987 was big mistake. We loosened some thing toward the end of the cold war that probably weren't good ideas. The idea that the dissolution of the USSR solved all of our international problems forever was ill founded.

In the 90s and 2000s TNT and TBS started and ended shows on the 5s instead of the top or bottom of the hour.
I was thinking 80s. Braves game at 6:35 with Phil Nekro starting live via giant satellite dish in our back yard. Forgot Georgia Championship Wrestling with Gordon Sole too.

Ted Turner was a business genius and brought sports on television out of the Dark Ages
Bought a small UHF channel in Atlanta & distributed it via satellite to cable systems all over the world when that is unheard of
Bought the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, & the Atlanta Flames then sold their broadcast rights to WTBS to fill it with live programming
Founded CNN which is ultimately responsible for the disaster of "NEWS" programming that we endure today
Won The Americas Cup
Married the Actress that personified the Hot/Crazy matrix for 2 plus generations
Attempted to compete with The Olympics with The Goodwill games after the US boycotted the 1980 Moscow games & the USSR boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles games
He showed Vince McMahon the path for promoting Wrestling on television

Now it's even worse. You have movies with an hour and 50 minutes of runtime that they put into a three hour block. Makes it unwatchable with all the commercials in between. No wonder cable tv is dying.

It started out as WTCG (Turner Communications Group, or "Watch This Channel Grow", take your pick). In the 70s, WTCG and HBO/Showtime were the only reasons to have cable. Well, thst and the improved reception over analog antennae.

WGN Soon followed suit, so we had Cubs games in the afternoon and the Braves at night.

I would watch WTCG practically all day. Loony Toons, Stooges, Little Rascals in the morning, Perry Mason at lunch, 60s sitcoms in the afternoon, and baseball at night. I think they showed Elvis movies throughout August after he died.

Their news anchor and show host, Bill Tush, was so goofy he was hilarious.

I honestly thought a 24 hour news channel was dumb up.until the first Gulf War...then it became must see TV.

Skip Caray was hilarious doing the Braves & Hawks games in the late 70s/early 80s. Both teams were horrible almost laughably bad.
"This game is almost as much fun as writing an alimony check"
About Hawks Small Forward John Drew - "Drew could not hit the broad side of a bull's posterior with a bass fiddle tonight"

It might have been. All we had were rabbit ears until Directv came along in the mid 90s.
We had the antenna on the tall poll, but all we could get was WTVA, WCBI, PBS, and when the atmosphere was just right WHBQ. The giant dish was like Christmas in July about 1983 when we came home and saw it.

We could pick up all the Memphis stations from our house at the foot of the bluff. We had the big pole outside too. My dad would have to take a pipe wrench and turn it to the south for the one night of the year that the Miss Mississippi pageant would come on and my mom had to watch it on one of the Greenville/Greenwood stations.(she was in the pageant a couple of years).

When we got Directv it was amazing.

I remember a few times when the Braves were really bad & they be getting blown out he’d say that if we promised to patronize the sponsors we had his permission to change the channel. Skip & Ernie were the best.

Good stuff. I remember when Fulton added what amounted to a public access channel. Basically the “special music” performance from your church all day.

Ted Turner referred to Christianity as a “religion for losers” and was a well established atheist for most of his life. He later moderated some of his positions, but did nothing to recant his statements per se. He ain’t RIP, fellas.

"Turner later apologized for these statements, expressing regret for his past criticism of religion. In later years, his views appeared to soften—he formed a $200 million partnership with Lutheran and Methodist churches to combat malaria, acknowledged that he no longer identified as an atheist or agnostic, and said he believed in "one God who manifests himself in different ways." Though he never fully embraced organized Christianity, he admitted to praying for sick friends and recognized religion as a "bright spot" in society."

Is forgiveness still a thing amongst Christians??

She earned that. It’s fine to oppose a war and Vietnam was controversial, but visiting enemy territory during war and supplying the subsequent propaganda that damage the US interests and likely negatively impacted troop safety was wrong and provoked appropriate backlash.

Ted Turner ain’t a Christian, bud. If you think recognizing Christianity as a “bright spot” garners salvation or even mercy, I’d suggest you read your New Testament.

The good Lord will judge him. Not me. But I do know what His word (and Word) says.

We now worship political leaders who believe in hatefulness, childlike retribution and marginalizing poor and needy people, so get out of here with your forgiveness mess. You do recall that if someone strikes you on your left cheek, you attack them every ounce of vigor you can muster, right?

I see no Good Lord here judging anyone. I only see you.
