Assuming that our political situation calms down a bit and Congress doesn’t do anything too stupid with regard to our Second Amendment rights in the near future, when do you guys think bullets and powder will be available again? I have plenty of brass and primers but want some specific hunting bullets and some Hodgdon powder. There continues to be absolutely none anywhere for almost a year now. I picked up some loaded ammo through Bass Pro on line last week at normal prices. I see some in a couple of other places at premium pricing. I think it is finally starting to ease up just a little. I just load to hunt and target shoot so no I don’t plan to take on Washington. Please try to keep any comments geared toward supply and demand of bullets and powder. We are not going to change the world here with another political argument so let’s not let it go there. Thanks for any insite into this issue.

If demand were to go back to normal tomorrow (which ain’t happening) it would be 2022 before manufacturers caught up. With our current political climate, I’d say we’re looking at four to five years of limited supply on both components and loaded ammo.

I read somewhere that supply will catch up late spring early summer

I hope it’s not that long but I would not surprise me. I was perhaps foolishly hoping that I could get some stuff in about 6 months. I need some Federal 180 grain TBT 30 Cal bullets and some Hodgdon H4831 or H4831sc powder. It’s just not happening any time soon.

I bought a nice Dillon reloader about 12 years ago and had trouble getting powder and primers so I never used it. Drug it back and trying to get it set up. Found powder but can't get any primers.

I’ve seen several ammo execs state that it will be 2Q of this year before production catches up to the backlog. That’s a safe assumption unless we see new restrictions announced.

The situation at my main two suppliers (Academy in Flowood and The Range in Gluckstadt) is worse now than I have ever seen it. On Friday, Academy did not have one bullet in supply, not even stuff like .17HMR that has always been on the shelf. As far as shotgun ammo, they only had .28 gauge. Hoarding is a big part of the problem and I don't think that will ease up in the foreseeable future. Maybe after hunting season, those common rounds (30.06, .270, etc) will come back. I remember there was panic buying after the Sandy Hook Shooting, but nothing like this.

Sounds to me like we need to get a few of our MSU engineers set up to make supplies.

Sure hope it returns normal sooner than later, but I have a feeling that notes were taken and the limited supply is going to be normal now.

this is my concern as well. I hope that is not the case. I think that we are all trying to lay in long term supplies just in case things don’t get better.

7 million new gun owners just this year in America. There is zero chance that supply catches up this year. I don’t care what the ammo execs are saying. I was working in the gun industry when Sandy Hook happened and it took two years to get back to normal supply after that. The panic buying this time around is ten times worse. Hunting rifles and ammo were relatively easy to get after Sandy Hook. No where to be found now. I’ve been putting back as much as I can for years. I had buddies that laughed at the idea that I was stocking up on hunting ammo until they had to call me to borrow a box of 270 or 30-06 this year. Buy when you can, not when you need it.

I saw a site with S&B Small Pistol Primers for $47 a thousand. I hope supply will equal demand soon. Got lucky in March, 2020, and bought 5,000 from Natchez Shooters supply. Got 3,800 left.

Is it time to separate the guns that were bought at dealers from the guns that were bought without filling out a transfer?

Who honestly gives a **** about guns purchased from individuals without a Form 4473 and an illegal background check?

But, but, but, aren't the records destroyed after 60 days?***
The records are never destroyed but the crap you see on TV where a cop types in a serial number and a name comes back is BS. A gun can be traced to its initial purchaser but not by computer, it takes leg work.

The Gestapo will certainly search for any undocumented guns when they come knocking on your door.

Someone I spoke with in gun manufacturing business said 2 years for supply to catch and only if the demand levels off some

I don’t anticipate much local trouble here in Mississippi with someone coming for your guns but this is a crazy world we live in now. Looking for powder and bullets. Need some H4831 or H4831sc. Would take some IMR 4831 if I had no choice, which looks to be the case. For bullets need some .308 dia. Federal Trophy Bonded Tip 180 grain.
