McGuire had no business being a rookie and coaching at a Big Ten School. Belonged in NAIA or D3
That's true of most guys when they get their start, but if you have connections you get to cut ahead in the line. Most of our best coaches never leave the HS ranks.

"We're gonna do something for the fans." I picture some sort of $10 admission "fan experience" outside the stadium. Pose in front of a life size cut out of Dylan Raiola and Coach Rhule, let kids run routes on a green carpet spread out on pavement, watch the team run through a 90 minute practice (which will look eerily the same as pregame warm up drills). Concessions for sale though- $5 for a bottle of water, $12 for a small cup of beer. $20 fan day T-shirts for sale.

Sounds about right. And it'll probably sell out.

Sorry but I won’t be attending something like this more likely would be a waste of time.

Heard their AD is thinking about a women’s flag football game. Most have got that idea during his time in Seattle.

I think a "fan experience" could be fun, especially if it's truly a whole family experience with plenty of cheesy photo ops and a cheerleader kissing booth for Dad, etc... 🙃

Dannen mentioned something about having 7 on 7 type competitions but I don't know how that differs from a spring game, it would still be putting our talent on the field for other programs to gauge.

Ekeler and Papuchis's first gigs were in Lincoln with Bo. Ekeler is back in Lincoln as a well regarded ST coach and Papuchis is coaching ST and DEs at FSU. I imagine McGuire will have a comparable career trajectory.

Cutting ahead in line doesn’t change the fact that you are inexperienced and not prepared. I mean good for them to get the opportunity but it’s very foolish of a P2 program to offer that.

He might, but what does his future have to do with this? His time here cost Rhule. Again, as a head coach at a Big Ten or SEC program you can’t afford to have someone cutting their teeth and sucking at their job.

Don't know about that. His first year the WR room was decimated by injuries and the QBs were decidedly not expert in the passing game. This past year, Banks was pretty productive and Barney was outstanding as a first year guy. Who was their coach?

Was he a complete failure? No
Do they need much more out of the WR group? Yes. Obviously Rhule decided he couldn’t wait several years before McGuire’s group to start producing. The WRs played much better after the arrival of Holgerson and he publicly stated he looked at them and wondered why they couldn’t block. He got them to improve at end of season. McGuire either failed to teach or the players didn’t take him seriously. Banks played at a high level after Holgerson came in. Before that he was very inconsistent.
I know you’ll disagree with me, it’s clear you are a McGuire worshiper but I hope you feel the same way after seeing the improvements this season. Or will you give all credit to McGuire?

It is Holgerson’s room and he wanted a guy who he had worked with prior and that guy brought a producer and a young kid with tremendous upside. Shorts is further along in his career and knows what Dana wants to do. Great choice. McGuire is a promising young coach. I’m not going to dump on a kid who took a chance offered after Mickey choked his wife and blew up his deal to be the WR coach. Garrett was in Lincoln because Joseph couldn’t control his temper.

A GA and Mickey were Rhule’s only two choices to coach WRs?

Interesting

At least he had a backup plan, unlike at QB coach

So you justify McGuire’s position by trashing Mickey. You keep saying McGuire is a promising young coach…..that may be true but Nebraska can’t operate on him being a good coach someday. They need a good coach now. It’s Big Ten football. High stakes. No room for someone that has a bright future but is below average today.

To be clear
Shorts was a great hire, and McGuire is with his old man in Lubbock. Absolutely nothing wrong with the way it played out.
Mickey trashed himself.

More power to them if they can actually get enough fans to pay up for something like that. Maybe they are gonna have autographs and pictures with players and then quietly later get rid of the fan day in the fall. I'm not a fan of 7 on 7 touch football so I would never watch that, but I bet Dannon thinks that plenty of other$ will. I'm probably just too negative about this. When I heard Dannon wants to ban the leave at halftime tailgate and reentry in order to force fans to buy his $12 warm cups of beer instead that put me over the edge.

As for identifying talent, my guess is any 7 on 7 would be without numbers to identify players. Fans wouldn't like that either, but then we would hear all about how other teams do it that way..... blah, blah, blah.

I believe both were GAs as well. Which is nice, but put a GA as head coach at an average HS with a tough schedule and they would get their asses handed to them more often than not.

I don't think you are that far off tbh.
