Back in the day it was, "how many fingers am I holding up?". If I was even remotely close I sat out one play then they asked me if I was ready and of course I always was....I can remember several of those. Who knows how many of them I don't remember... Thank goodness we got some foam padded helmets in high school. In middle school we were still using the old fabric web things. Most of the older guys who have had issues with CTE played quite a few years at some level in those crappy things.
