POWER 4 teams
-Alabama
-LSU
-Clemson
-BYU
-Florida
-South Carolina
-Miami

Non POWER 4
-Army, Navy, or Air Force

With the expanded playoff, you can have one and maybe two losses and still dance. Therefore, you need to look for sexy matchups to sell season tickets.

Sexy: Alabama, Miami, Notre Dame, maybe Texas. Georgia I guess, but I don’t feel tingles personally.

Local: Pitt might sell some tickets but WVU has a better program unless RichRod soils the bed.

Possible sexy depending on their near term performance: LSU, Clemson, OK, FLA. VT?!

We need better games to justify escalating ticket prices. Navy won’t do that.

Also, PSU can’t be afraid of scheduling a non-conference opponent that would have a good chance to beat them. Look at OSU-Texas this season; both of those teams probably are NC contenders, but one of them is going to lose, but there’s just so much prestige in playing in one of those games. Games like that also attract better players, and should make your team better as the season progresses.

Last season’s non-conference schedule didn’t help PSU one bit, and actually turned that team into a lethargic and listless mess.

Why not one of the Power 4's I mentioned and a service academy in same season? I think service academy games would sell out.

I read that earlier. Apparently IU said a game with ND didn't fit their OOC scheduling philosophy. I think Cignetti doesn't want to give ND any advantage. I hope PSU would also refuse to schedule ND. Let them join a confetence.
Ohio State played ND in a home and away a couple of years ago. This year and last it is Texas, Alabama is next. Cignetti does not want to risk a loss.

We need to schedule big games to sell EXPENSIVE tickets. We did not fire Franklin or spend $800 million on the stadium to play it safe. Kraft has to put good games on the schedule every year. We don’t control the conference schedule so he has to aim for top tier or settle…. I thought we weren’t settling anymore.

Adding Bama to the schedule again would be great. Intersectional battles of national brands are great for college football fans.

The last thing Penn State needs are boring cupcake service academies. A hard pass there.

All of the above and any ACC team not named Syracuse as well.

I had the same thought… there are certainly many teams out there that would be more intriguing than service academies, but I’d gladly see us play service academies over MAC type teams.
There is a benefit to our fans and players when competing against the services academy teams: a reminder that those young men - and the young women they will serve with - will perform a great sacrificial service to our nation.

I think if we could find a way for it to be mutually beneficial, WVU and Pitt should probably be on the schedule every year. Whether that means 2 for 1 or what, I don't know. It's good for the state, and it's good for regional football from the peewee levels up. Those are the types of rivalries that should be restored. Nothing wrong with some good banter between families, neighbors, and coworkers. And it keeps the stakes high.

I would choose to play Pitt every season. I would also be in favor of rotating Pitt, WVU, and Syracuse.

LSU. The cajun food at their tailgates must be awesome.
Miami. Spent a lot of time there when my son was going to law school. Miami Beach is a great destination.

Right? Like they shouldn't be the big game but way better than many of our current OOC games

This is my nightmare lol
But to each their own...I just don't see any benefit. A win doesn't help our resume. A loss is horrific. Nostalgia maybe?
Ok so if that’s the case. How come OU still played OSU every year before leaving for the SEC. I know it was a Conference game but I never heard them complain. In fact, when OU left for the SEC, they made it clear the want to continue the rivalry but the Cowboys don’t want to. How come UGA has no problem playing GaTech every year? And before Matt Campbell got there you could argue why would Iowa lower themselves to play ISU every year? Clemson USCe?

I think Penn State and Pitt should play every year. It’s great for the sport, great for the State, and most importantly great for the fans. If they play every year it’s a Top 10 Rivalry Game in College Football. No doubt!

As I posted in a prior thread, posters who want us to play Pitt have probably have never attended a PSU- Pitt game in Pittsburgh.
