One of these days Nebraska will have to be bold when hiring the next head coach and go to FCS and hire the next man. I'm not saying it will happen anytime soon but you have a lot of vey talented young coaches who would just do a great job. You look at SDS head man with Nebraska ties, Dan Jackson who is only 41 years old who has already showing he knows how to win.

I could go down the list of other FCS coaches but I'm sure everyone here already knows how to do this. Why does Nebraska have to have a power 5 coach? most likely for recruiting but in todays day and age of NIL it can easily be overcome. Curt Cignetti came from James Madison and turned the switch quickly and I feel all it takes is the guts from the AD and the support of the major donors and that's the major hurdle. jmo

Kinda odd to specify young coaches and then use Cignetti as an example. I object to the premise as Matt Rhule isn't going anywhere.

I was using FCS coaches as the example not ages. My gosh no one said Matt Rhule is staying or going I stated at some point in time FCS coaches should be looked at. Sometimes I wish we were like the old Indiana with nothing to lose and you just take a shot at young up and coming coaches who could turn your program around.

I can say what may happen to Nebraska if Matt does leave, Nebraska has taken steps forward as a program, he leaves we fall back and fall way back and I'm not sure we can recover for a long time until that bright young charismatic leader is hired.

When using James Madison University I should correct myself and say they are Division I FBS now and not FCS anymore but my point still remains.

Nobody has any idea what Matt will do.
I fell in love with a Nebraska that was tough as nails, punishing offense and just had dudes in the trenches.
Now we are a modern version of every team out there with some upgraded talent but we are soft (although getting better).

Hope Matt can get us dominant again. It’s been a long ride to the bottom and it feels somewhat good to see progress but there’s a lot of season left

Our run of success, not only in longevity, but in intensity from 1993-1997 has poisoned the well and created an almost impossible situation when it comes to bringing a coach into Lincoln. #1 : The fan base assumes that winning is easy because we had the greatest team of all time. #2 : The fan base is illogically loyal because we had the greatest team of all time, #3 : The fan base compares every coach to T.O because we had the greatest team of all time...meanwhile the decision makers are not incentivized because the fans are relatively nice, they show up and fill the stadium, the program makes money hand over fist. And the players are overwhelmed with pressure and support far beyond their talent level. The decision makers are frozen into making the "safe" decision because being average will still fill the stadium, the only risks would be bringing in a guy like cally, who is hated because he is different...Bo was loved because he coached with Solich and was culturally compatible, Reilly was liked enough because he was nice like T.O, Frost was brought in because he was a former MNC winner at QB, and Rhule says nice things about Nebraska and their past. The worst part is the vacuum between 1997 has been so abysmal that there hasn't been any new culture created, just a comparison to T.O. The next winning coach will have to overcome this inertia with something so unique and unusual that it will scare the hell out of the fan base and face a lot of backlash while figuring out how to win in a league much more competitive than T.O ever coached in.

I believe that people that are winners are always winners. Cignetti is an example of that. Urban Meyer is an example of that. You have to see a repeated history of winning at each level. Hiring from FCS is smart if you want a low cost-high reward coach. You also need to fire after three years if it isn't working.

One “retread” that would be a GREAT fit at NU is DeBoer after Bama fires him…..
