Reservoir

[MarkDallas]

Has there been any talk of renaming the Reservoir? I'm surprised it's lasted this long. Ross Barnett was "a real jerk" as Norm McDonald would say.

Lamumba Lake last I heard.

Haven't heard any yet. Spent my formative years living on it and my folks still live there and I don't know anyone that calls it by name. It's always the Reservoir or the Rez.

There's been talk of that for years, but it never gains much steam.

But the times they are a'changin'.

Ross's contemporary, George Wallace, may have his name removed from buildings, etc., in Alabama. In fact, his wife Lurleen is included in the un-namiing I believe. I don't think removing the Wallace name will face a lot of opposition.

I've been wondering for at least a decade when that's going to become an issue. Renaming the Rez is low hanging fruit.

There will have to be a lot of renaming in MS if they start renaming everything based on the racial views of previous governors. J.P. Coleman State Park, Paul B. Johnson State Park, John Bell Williams State Wildlife Management Area, Hugh White State Park, to name a few. Additionally, MSU might want to think about renaming the John C. Stennis Institute of Government. Stennis was a segregationist, one of the signers of the Southern Manifesto, and voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Civil Rights Act of 1968, and the MLK national holiday.
