Charles wasn't on the 1978 team. His first year was on the 79-80 team. RIP Charles.

In '78 he lead the Rockets to the state championship hitting a game tying shot against Covington Holmes with 3 seconds to go. Shelby County went on to win its 2nd championship, the first being in '66 with Mike Casey's team.

He's not family but it feels like family. My mom used to get VCR tapes from my uncle sent to us. He was early early on my experience watching UK,

Is it possible to listen to Cawoods call ?
Saw on tv with volume down and radio on with the Ledford up loud ..

because was rooting for Covington to win 9th regions first tournament.

Took Simon Kenton and Troy McKinley couple years later to win for the 9th region its first and listened to Cawood on radio.Loud no TV.

I was at UK same time as Charles. No one was a better person than him. Such a kind and quality man. Truly a loss. Prayers to his family.

My response was to the poster that commented on Hurt having the final dunk in the Championship against Duke. He didn't that was Lee. Hurt wasn't on that team.

Wow so sorry to hear this ! Charles was the unsung cat when he played. Remember when he and Barkley tangled and both tossed I think . Rest in peace Charles !

I didn't know he was sick either. One of my favorites at UK and I'll never forget him going face to face with Barkley in the SEC tourney.

So sad to hear about this. Apparently, he was really a good guy and chose a career that suited him well.

Great pictures. Charles had the upper and lower body strength that gave him the ability to play bigger opponents and not get pushed around. He just out muscled them.

Agree, he was as tough as they come. Strong and agile. Sad to hear his passing.
Prayers for his family.

I am always sad to have these guys pass on. Many times as a kid on the court I WAS Charles or Mel and they are both gone too soon. HUGE part of my childhood and will be missed greatly.

We weep with those that weep. Charles was always fired up on the court. One of my favorites from that time.

It's a sad day in Kentucky, he was always a fan favorite and one of the most likeable wildcats ever. I remember the time Kentucky and Auburn played and Barkley and Hurt faced off and Barkley blinked first, you did not want to mess with that man. Hurt looked like he was chiseled out of stone with those shoulders and Barkley was baby fat and knew he better back up and he did. RIP Charles!

Charles never shied away from contact. Toughest guy on the floor every night.
