Though the South was greatly outnumbered and rural by maybe 7 or 8 to 1 they almost wupped us on pride and tactics alone.....without pride you lose before you even started...its something that can't be bought or sold and if you don't have it I wouldn't know what else to tell you.

I think in the end we will be adding some real talent. All these decomits sound bad now but I feel the coaching staff is going to real in some big ones. They will be the type of people who want to be here and are willing to train hard to produce a winning program.

Ash has it right. The LBs -- particularly the MLB -- are a priority in his defense because he bases his defense out of a cover-2/cover-4 shell. While the safeties don't play particularly deep in his scheme, they have their own run gaps to worry about and can't provide much run support.

The Philadelphia Eagles used to run a wide-9, cover-4 system similar to what Ash runs (ironically, they may be returning to this style under new defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz).

Here is one of the best articles I've read explaining the importance of having a solid/instinctive MLB in this type of system.

Overall, I get the sense that the MLB is the one position in his defense that will require a "plus" player with the right blend of size, technique, & instincts.

Slightly OT, but here's another fantastic article about type of system Ash is going to install. Although it's for Michigan State, the same rules probably apply.

TL;DR - don't worry too much about Rene. The key to Ash's style of defense is the MLB.

Your statement reflects the opinion of 50-60% of New Jersey residents. Do u have pride in your home? I mean it is just a roof over your head, do you have pride in your community? It is about appreciating where you live. If u like where you live you will defend it. Rutgers as the state U is part of that equation. Many NJ residents have more pride sending their kids to out of state universities that are not even as good as Rutgers academically yet brag about their kids being there. I have traveled to most states in the US and NJ as a whole has the least pride of any state I know. There are states with half the resources, educational opportunities and cultural experiences yet they have twice the pride. I don't know if you can ever change that culture in one generation. That is why it is a "thing"!

I only ever take pride in things that I've contributed to in some material way. So, my kids, my work, anything I had to earn. As opposed to things I had nothing to do with, that were given to me or are coincidental.

I never thought about it before, but In general, I'm maybe just not a very prideful person. So maybe that explains my lack of understanding. Hm. I'll have to think about it.

I've lived in the Midwest and in the Southwest: if you've never lived outside of NJ, you have no concept of what state pride is. And without having experienced it, I'm not sure how to explain it if you don't have a reference.

I have lived outside NJ, although not for a very long time. In TX at one point, which is a very prideful state. I still don't get it.
