I can’t tell you how many rocks I threw up and hit over the power line pretending I was Chipper Jones. Searching all day for the perfect smooth circular rocks to hit. Lol I don’t know him. I guess I’m to young. ;)

His prime was mid 80's. I would venture to say that close to 50% of long time Braves fans would have him as their favorite. Chipper was awesome too. He's in the Hall, Dale isn't, but in my opinion, should be.

According the Baseball Hall of Fame website: "Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played."

Factor in his 2 MVP's alongside his integrity/sportmanship, he should have been a first ballot Hall of Famer.

  • Sports Illustrated's "Sportsmen of the Year" Award: 1987.
  • Represented baseball as their "Athlete Who Cares the Most" for his charity work, along with U.S. gold medalist Judi Brown King, Kenyan gold-medalist Kip Keino and others.
  • Lou Gehrig Award: 1985. Given to the player who most exemplifies the character of Lou Gehrig, both on and off the field.
  • Roberto Clemente Man of the Year Award: 1988. Given to the player who "best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team".
  • Bart Giamatti Community Service Award: 1991

I remember a story about him that I will never forget. I don't know if it is true, but it definitely sounds like him.
In 1982, they won their division by one game. On the plane ride home, Murph went to every single player on the team and told them something they did in one game that led to them winning and that was the one game they won the division by. THAT is character!!

Even though I am a Yankee fan I'm also a big Murphy fan. Back around during the back to back M.V.P. seasons my son was due to be born. I decided to write him a fan letter and I ask him for two autographed pictures. We had already picked out names for either a boy or a girl and ask him to send a picture to both. A little over a year went by and we had not received anything. Then I checked the mail one day and here's what I got. Three autographed pics. One with Best wishes Skyler, Dale Murphy. Best wishes Sena (girls name), Dale Murphy and the third Best wishes Dale Murphy just in case we changed our minds about the names. Also a hand written letter from him apologizing for taking so long to respond back. The reason for the length of time was obvious. He had to read everyone of his letters. That about sums it up about the character and class of the man. I also read his autobiography "The Murph." A must read. Not you ordinary book about a baseball player. OFC

Great story!! He was already my all time favorite player, and that just confirms one of the reasons why!

Anybody ever been to a braves game? I got a few autographs . Glavine , Leo(pitching coach and can’t spell his last name). It starts with a M, Bobby Cox , and a couple more I forget . I was like 11. With pretty memorial stories on how I got them. I got Leo’s where the players leave and enter the stadium. He got out his car and dad yelled at him, and he motioned me to come, so security let my dad pick me up over the fence and enter their parking lot! Bobby Cox was leaving the parking lot and stopped, rolled down the window puffing a cigar! I got a game ball from I think Spooneybarger? I don’t know if I spelt it right but dad yelled Hey Spooney, and he turned around and threw us the ball. Think he was a relief pitcher. This was the time TBS broadcasted their games....:( I had T painted on my chest, and my other 2 friends had the B and S trying to get on tv...Every game we were debating running on the field during the game. My parents were even ok with it.i guess you can’t really get in trouble as a kid??? Or kicked out the last game anyway who cares.... We never had the guts though! Lol Lot of good memory’s there

Been to many Braves games. Were you going in Atlanta or a visiting park? I will never forget my first game. Fulton County Stadium. It was the perfect scenario. The Braves were down by 3 in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded. The catcher, Bruce Benedict was up. Every time he came to the plate, I thought the crowd was booing him, then I finally realized they were saying Bruuuuuuuuce.....
Anyway, two outs, bases loaded, down by 3......Bruce hits a 404 foot rocket to straight away center.....the wall was 405......I believe those are the correct measurements, anyway, it was exciting until the center fielder caught the ball leaning against the wall. That was my first game and I was hooked and a Braves fan from then on. I watched a lot of miserable seasons with only about 10,000 people in the stands. Loved listening to Skip Carey call the games

The Braves finally put together a couple good years in the 80's when they had Gary Matthews, Bob Horner and "Murph" in the line-up. Murph and Horner batted 3rd and clean-up. I loved it when the late Ernie Johnson noted: "Oh they're going to intentionally walk Murphy with Horner on deck. Well what kind of poison do they want?" Haha, great memories....

I think the Braves are still doing good this year. Sure it won’t last long though. They basically develope players for other teams who can afford them......:( The way it seems as a casual fan like me anyway. One of the big reasons baseball is hard to watch. You grow and like a certain player and bam! he’s gone. All while usually sucking. If the Braves were Duke it be different. My favorite team sucks or has a good year and loses all their players that made them not suck lol. There’s a money problem in baseball imo. Or for me.It would make a World Series title that much better though! Need a miracle and probably live to 100 to see it though! Lol..Also it was much easier to watch when you could actually watch it...on TBS.

So many great memories of going to Atlanta for Braves games. We were standing in the area at Fulton County Stadium where you could see the players arrive. It was just me, my parents, and my sister. While we were standing there, Jerry Royster came walking up to us. He talked along time with us and took pictures. I was there in 91 when the Braves went worst to first. That was amazing. Watching the Giants game on the big screen with the players on the field. Hugging complete strangers when they clinched. You could feel the stadium moving under your feet.

One of the best is getting playoff tickets vs the Dodgers in 2013. My mom had passed away a year earlier so I got my dad and myself a couple tickets. We headed down and just spent the day together. We neither one had ever gotten a foul ball in all the years we have gone to games. On this day, BJ Upton tossed me a baseball and Justin Upton tossed my dad a ball. We were like 2 ten year olds. My dad has since passed and he was such a Braves fan that we had it put in his obituary. I am so excited seeing the Braves on the uptick but it is with some sadness that I can't pick up the phone and call my dad to talk about it. I had a dream not long after he passed. It was as real as if I was actually talking to him. He told me that he was the one they picked to come and talk to me. He said that he wanted me to know that it was beautiful there. The only thing I could ask him was, can you watch the Braves. He said, "believe me, if I want to know about the games, I can find out."

One more funny story about my dad, the Braves, and the Murph. My mom and dad had went to a game with my aunt and uncle. My mom and aunt had stayed on my dad and uncle about getting them something to eat. They kept telling them to wait until they saw Murph bat. Well, the other team was up so they decided to make a quick run to the concession stand. Well it ended up being a quick 1 2 3 inning and guess who was first up for the Braves. First pitch to Murph was a foul ball that literally bounced in the chair that my dad would have been sitting in if my mom had not sent him to the concession stand. He never let my mom forget that one.
