This was a very good class for us, blessing us with AWalk, Lanny, Godwin, North, Kyle Queiro, Warren Long, and Alviti. Also McShep, Hunter the Punter, Brett Walsh and Macan Wilson.

That’s an amazing haul from one class: 3 NFL talents and a bunch of starters.

The same class was also hammered by attrition:
Matt Harris
Tommy Fuessel
Keith Watkins
Blake King
Jayme Taylor
Joraskie
Coverdale

Imagine if Harris and Fuessel had stayed healthy (thank God Fuessel is alive and well).

I remember how hyped ‘Tommy Football’ was in the fall of 2012. I vividly recall him playing with so much heart in the state title game in Champaign.

I am an alum of his HS and ran into someone who was a good friend of his a year or two ago. For years I had been wondering what the hell happened.

Anyway, he definitely played the ending of that state title game concussed. According to his friend, he was totally out of it following the game that night.

Quite a list of attrition. The one I miss not having the opportunity to play was Joraskie. He ran a leg in the 400 meter relay. AT his size that is spectacular. Imagine him and Lanny with their ability to get to the sidelines...

Didn't Joraskie try his hand at WWE after football?

Always felt bad for Keith Watkins. Very gifted athlete that never caught a break. Speaks to NU's pitch in recruiting for the next forty years, not the next four.

Yeah. I was pretty impressed by his speed.

He retired due to concussions. I think he studied neuroscience. I doubt he pursued wrestling for a career.

I saw Matt lying on the ground at Penn State. Dear Lord it was scary. Glad he walked away. Still has that NU degree!

Felt bad for all those guys, but Harris could have ended up w/ a special career at CB if it hadn't ended prematurely.
Yeah. He had NFL talent. Needed to get bigger, but certainly looked like a guy who would get invited to camp one way or another.

The guy who quit the football team and became a wrestler was Jack Schwaba
Here’s an article detailing his decision. IMHO, Mental health is as legitimate a reason to quit the brutal sport as any. I knew quite a few depressed or mentally unhealthy D1 players who would have been much better off focusing on “getting well” instead of football, but unfortunately mental health issues were taboo to even discuss a decade ago. It doesn’t look like he’ll make it as a professional wrestler, but I hope he’s leveraging his NU degree for a better future otherwise.
