Handley and Sherando are also both 4-0. They will play each other in the regular season. Handley gave JF a good game in the regional semis last year, so I suspect they are for real.
In the thirteen seasons since GW dropped to what is now called Class 4, they have reached the regional championship three times - 2020 (played in spring of ‘21), 2021, and last year. In those three games, the Eagles have lost by an average of 30 points. Almost every year, they have received much fanfare as a favorite to win the region. And every single year, they have ultimately proven to have been an imposter. I suspect their regular season schedule makes GW appear much more formidable than they actually are (although they have admirably upgraded their schedule in recent years). At any rate, until they actually break through and prove they can win the region, I see no reason to think this year will be any different.
In the end, I think the Region D champion is going to be Jefferson Forest or Salem, with Handley also having a viable chance. This is all barring injuries or any other unforeseen defections, of course.

I think it’ll come down to Salem and Jefferson Forest. Sherando, James Wood, Handley, and G.W. are all decent, but not on the level of the first two consistently.

Sherando has a good O-line and strong RB, but hasn’t defended the pass well and struggles to make tackles despite getting into the backfield often. If they can fix those issues I might call them a contender.

Syracuse. I know he turned heads at a couple of the camps around VA too. Would love to see him stay in state.
I think it would be a good game. From what I've seen on NFHS, Salem is the better team at this point in the season, but the gulf between them might not be as big as it was in 2017. This year's Sherando reminds me a lot of the Kettle Run teams from the past few years, though maybe not at that level yet. No one guy that can take over a game, but solid all around and will run teams to death if they can't handle Sherando's O-line.
Salem physicality this year makes that sound like a fun match up. Salem plays hard, physical and fast and it wins them games. Still stuff to clean up. I know dinwiddie was a good test, but still think a team that can match them physically will keep a game too close for comfort because they are making some mental mistakes. They can be cleaned up. And Salem usually does. But certainly not unbeatable in 4D

I agree with this list. Obviously you're going to run into some good teams along the way no matter what, but getting a top 2 seed will be very beneficial this year. #3 and #4 will get very loseable home games in the first round.
Please stop disrespecting GW with this Salem nonsense you guys are like Cowboy fans saying it’s our year every year. Salem didn’t even make the playoffs last year so shhhh. You got 1 possibility of a tough game remaining on your schedule for the regular season. You think Salem is the only team with RB’s this season you’re delusional. GW has 4 RB’s that can start with that being said the highest seed you would get is 3 with your schedule as weak as it is outside of Dinwidde and PH. So just keep their name out of your conversation until it’s your turn to get beat.

Also the Salem disrespect? I don’t think anyone on Salem was talking last year, and the last season Salem beat GW the Salem fans weren’t all RA RA about Salem’s prospects to go all the way given what they had seen in the regular season. Salem has 14 state appearances and 10 state wins in the last 40 years without a losing season. Cowboys comparison is pretty weak.

I hope GW does make noise in the playoffs. Not that it matters but I have fell for the GW hype before and to see it fizzle out in the playoffs. They are going to have to show me, they beat Glass 20-7 and Glass is way down. Good luck to whoever you root for, this is all opinions and fun on this board, at least it should be.

BTW, what does who GW plays in JV have anything to do with anything? JV is JV. Absolutely no correlation to Friday nights. They play the same people on JV that they play on varsity. Besides, how tough are the JV teams at Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Hidden Valley and Pulaski?
I'll say this. GW folk pay attention. They know the history with Salem and they haven't forgotten the beat down JF put on them last year. All are motivators when they don't want to lift weights of practice hard. We all know there is a future collision coming between at least a couple of these teams. There's also no disrespect for Sherando or Handley either.
Last thing.......don't confuse respect for fear. See y'all mid to late November. In the meantime...........................

I don't want to speak for him but I think he is saying GWs schedule wouldn't be considered a tough jv schedule. I may be wrong. GW isn't trash but just hasn't had success in the playoffs, there are plenty of teams that would trade records with them.
Why don't they want to lift weights or practice hard? I learned this summer that the Spartans lift weights outside in the summer in the middle of the day.Even the JV does it

Didn't mean to imply that GW kids don't lift or work hard. Very misleading on my part. They do get after it most days but there is always a handful f players that don't put in the effort that's needed, or there are days where maybe it's 90 degrees and the practice effort lacks. I think all programs prob can relate. To be a champion you can't take days off. That's the perception we have of Salem and JF and GW coaches have worked hard to instill that in their players. When those days do roll around coaches are quick to remind the kids about those a$$ whippings.

Maybe it would be competitive for a half or maybe a quarter or maybe three quarters. But it would be cool just to see how it would go.
JV is a hudge indicator of the quality of a program.
