Can someone help me understand why the tutor-gate kids can’t use a redshirt this season? They’ll be playing in no more than 4 games, so it seems like they should qualify, but I keep hearing they can’t redshirt.

What is the rule there? Does the NCAA treat a suspended game like a game played? If so, that seems incredibly stupid.

Their penalty from the NCAA is that they lose 70% of one season's eligibility. If they redshirt, they would not be losing any eligibility. These suspensions are similar to Renardo Sidney just less games.

Man, that’s rough. Seems about like a school telling a regular student that they’re going to pull 12 credit hours and force them to graduate 4 classes short.

I get the suspensions, but I guess it just seems to me like they could have handled this without impacting overall eligibility. That would be devastating for a senior, but then again... these kids knew what they were doing

We screwed up so should be punished but im not sure how this prompts anyone to self report anything that could be level 1

Seriously. Our penalties for this 1 incident involving this tutor are almost as severe as any infractions case taken before the NCAA. It's right up there with the Ole Miss situation which took over a year and countless hours of interviews and investigation. We have lost 11 players to 70% of their games, probation, scholarship and visits reduced. I mean...damn. The only thing we didn't have to deal with was the cloud of uncertain hanging over the program.

This probation and the FBI case is probably going to hamper basketball recruiting b/c we are going to have to be squeaky clean. That's a distinct disadvantage in college basketball.

You say you get the suspensions, but then you advocate for them to not be suspended.
Redshirting doesnt penalize anyone- they still get to play their 4 years. That isnt a suspension from games with lost eligibility- its a delay with eventual full play.

The players had someone else take tests for them. Thats damn egregious and if they were just forced to redshirt, there would effectively be no penalty for the players. Hell- that might be a reason to risk cheating in the future. Tell a player that cant pass a basis science class that they can have someone else take the tests and at worst they redshirt if caught- that would probably be enticing.

Your last sentence says it all- they knew what they were doing.

I would love to hear what you think the penalty for paying someone to take your tests for athletes should be.

The punishment is fair. They are damn lucky they are still in school. Fred Brown was expelled from the University. Must have been a repeat offender. The honor code is a real thing, and the first word in the term student athlete is STUDENT. I know this goes on at other institutions, but these guys were lazy, the tutor was stupid, and they hopefully learned their lesson. Playing time in Division 1 football is like a resume on video tape for NFL scouts. These young men just took a big chunk of their "resume'" and threw it in the garbage.

No link, but Will Redmond was suspended 18 games. That was his entire freshman season and half his sophomore year. He could not get a redshirt.

The NCAA is who grants the redshirts. If the suspension is due to a violation of NCAA rules, then they likely will not grant a redshirt (Will Redmond, Renardo Sidney).

If it's simply a violation of team rules, then the NCAA probably won't care and they would grant a redshirt (see Joe Mixon at Oklahoma).

We are our own worst enemy.

Why don't we try to low-ball the NCAA when we self-impose suspensions. It's a basic negotiation tactic.

We self-imposed, same with Redmond. I am sure there was little to no negotiation. We offered and they accepted.
It was a negotiated penalty under the new system. That's not the same as "self-imposed." I dont think there's any way to know what our starting position was.

If I had to bet, is it's what they accepted. We are horrible at this...
