Refs is what is wrong with college game.

I am not talking Kentucky games I am talking all cbb. Its not the shot clocks, it's not the lane, its not the 3 point line. The Refs muck up the game and call too many cheap fouls in all the games. Officiating has just been horrendous IMO. They kill the flow and runs in just about every game I have watched the last few games. Everyone needs to focus on replacing all the refs instead of changing the rules. Just my thoughts.

Well I agree the refs are the problem but to me it's more that they call no fouls at all in the post while nit-picking the guards to death on the perimeter

It's like they have two sets of rules: no calls in the paint and ticky-tack crap calls at the arc

they share some blame but why are coaches left off the hook?

look at the comments by cinncy players and their coach. all they talk about is how physical they wanted to make the game. this is what the game has devolved into. and its crap.

coaches get paid millions of dollars....to coach. but most are frauds. its really hard to actually develop players skill wise and its even harder to land the really skillful players. but super easy to get marginally talented basketball players that will play physical. dont teach the game...but rather...physicality. because if its a game of skill...they will get crushed. so morph the game into rock fights.

and sure the refs allowed it for far far too long.

And yes indeed they carry a lot of the responsibility for the crappy way a lot of colleges ball these days too

It's almost like they are too busy to teach fundamental skills when it's so easy to send the kids to the weight room and let a trainer do all the work

Maybe that's an answer: make them spend more time on the court and less time in the weight room

What kills me is that they "guess" at calls. They think it is going to be a call, so they call it, whether there is actually a foul or not.

And so MANY missed calls. Holy moly.

I was watching a ul game a couple of years ago and was commenting on the fact that Pitino coaches a dirty style of basketball. My wife, much to her amusement, pointed out to me that it wasn't Rick's responsibility to make sure the game was played fairly, his job was to make sure his team won.

I grew up in an era when taking three steps after picking up your dribble was a travel. Did they make a concerted effort to overlook this point? Did I miss an announcement?

They are calling fouls on the perimeter for such small infractions that the ball handler doesn't know he was fouled. You see them looking around to see why play was stopped. Meanwhile, we have 7 foot tall 250 pound men attempting to jump straight up and having their arms remain behind. Their body magically shifts three feet to the right as they jump straight up. What could possibly cause that?

Actually I think it's the zone defense. It makes for horrible basketball and turns the inside into a war zone. I HATE the zone defense!

I'm not sure what the problem is. It might be a number of things. I just know that what was once a beautiful game has turned into something I can barely tolerate watching these days. Compare today's college basketball games to those from 20 years ago. The difference is amazing. College basketball was once really fun to watch. Up through the 1990s I watched every game I could because I enjoyed them. Now, I pretty much watch UK games only. The game just isn't as enjoyable to me anymore. It has become a very ugly game.

I don't know about you guys but after about 5 minutes today I was ready for the refs to go home and let it turn into a last man standing sort of thing. damn. And for the 2nd half to begin with a simple standing body foul on Towns was a tragedy interruption.

Yup. Coaches are awful too.

It works both ways - the coaches teach thug ball, the refs let it happen. What's the incentive to not play that way, especially when you're outmatched?

I thought the ref's sucked in the Butler/ND game today. Hell the ball went out of bounds once and another 4 seconds went off the clock before it even stopped, during OT. They need to pay attention to those type of things. Not to mention the nut shove the ND player gave the Butler guy with 0.6 sec left going for that tip in.

Officiating across the board is just terrible. I don't know hot it can be so bad. Routinely they miss multiple blown calls at key moments.

I understand people are only human, but cmon.

Agreed and it worse now than ever.

There are too many no calls and phantom fouls where they guy called for the foul does not even touch the other player.

Whatever happened to the traveling call when you slide down on the floor to get the ball?
If they are going to call "held ball" so fast they need to reinstitute tossing it up.

Most of the officials today seem clueless.

Nailed it. The coaches encourage it and the refs allow it. To me, this is the thing that's ruining b-ball, college and pro. Sometimes, there's less contact in rugby than in college hoops.

Changing the shot clock is not the answer IMO. It actually encourages bad shots and 1-on-1 games (look at the NBA). It may help give more highlight-reel opportunities and more "wow's" from the crowd, but its really terrible basketball (again, my opinion).

Call the fouls ... if a few times have to start the 2nd half with 4 ppl, eventually they'll get the message. One thing I've realized this tourney ... SEC refs might not really be the worst.

The biggest problem I see, is that the officials are always out of position making the calls.

No way an official can tell if a foul is committed if he is behind the play......see this ALL the time. Way to much anticipation on the officials part.

With three officials it seems to me, one could, at least. be in proper position?

There are a lot of refs that act like the packed arenas and tv camera's are there for them. They make dumb calls from 50 feet away just to get a reaction. They make me sick.

I am just sick to death of the fouls called inside when the defender is standing still with arms straight up. It's like they have all been instructed to call it a foul. Then they let all the hacking go. If our guys were floppers, Cincy's front line would have fouled out.

call the fouls. that's what's wrong. there is so much contact in modern basketball because fouls are not called according to the rules of the game.

Blubo pretty much nailed it. simply most coaches encourage the rough play because they know the refs won't call it. The NCAA needs to tell the refs to call it or they won't get any games assigned to them. college basketball is an absolute joke now. It is sad as it was once a fabulous fame to watch.

I agree with you and its not that it catches the refs off guard as coaches brag about they are going to shove, push, smack, elbow, delivery body blows, play streetball, and rape as many players as they can. If the refs will enforce the rules and call the fouls then coaches will clean the game up. Then officials can become officials of basketball once again. Lo and behold the losing coach of uk's game cried freethrows were the reason they lost after saying they were going to be very physical against uk.

One of the worst no calls yesterday was when the Cincy player got his shot blocked back in his face and the 35 second clock goes off and he shoots the ball and it goes in and they count it. I couldn't believe it. They did not even bother to review it and I don't know if Cal said anything to them or not. Ridiculous is the only word for it.
