It’s a really tough job, no doubt.

But system changes and reforms are in order to improve refereeing and protect the integrity of the game.

First- refs don’t make enough— $90 per game is a lower hourly rate than my teenager makes some nights babysitting.

The monopoly IHSA cries over a (real) referee shortage while it takes a piece of every fee, while adding zero value and purposefully preventing the free market from working. If it were, refs would make twice what they get now. And more for bigger games.

The IHSA self-inflicted “shortage” leads to a situation in which it has to keep around bad referees, for fear of offending any and not having enough.

Let the better crews make more money— as schools bid them up because they know they do a good job.

And let the worst ones — the lazy refs who don’t know high school football rules, who let their biases drive their calls in the game and who want the game to end as fast as possible— be punished.

That’s punished by the IHSA, which needs to play a regulatory role and acknowledge egregious calls, not pretend they didn’t happen, or get out of the refereeing business.

And punished by the marketplace itself, which would push out bad referees were it be allowed to work.

Saw a few replays on the NFHS broadcasted games today that gave better angles and 100% of the time the refs got some of the tougher calls correct. Were there mistakes today? Absolutely. Were any game outcomes impacted by those mistakes? Absolutely not. So quit whining.

They try to “slow” the game down sometimes that’s all! Pay attention

How bout those redskins buddy?
game literally went exactly how I said it would (thanks for calling them the Redskins, btw). Be careful bashing the Redskins, it's the smallest 5A school that has embarrassed your 8A team 2 years in a row.

It's a pretty big change to have guys who have worked 5 man mechanics all year switch to 7 man after 10 or 11 weeks. Granted there are officials working college ball on Saturdays who would have some experience but seems like a stretch to say it would be better.

Baseball goes from 2 Man all season and switches to 3 man for playoffs. Not an easy adjustment as you get no 3 man in the regular season. Takes a few games to get used to it. And some times people are caught out of position ( like me)

Can’t imagine the difference btw 5 & 7 officials in football. Imagine a lot.

7-man takes a lot of pressure off the back judge linesman and head linesman/line judge. Shortens the field. Changes the keys. You’re looking at a lot less which makes for a better officiated game.

It may be a lot but I think it’s definitely worth it.
