He's definitely on the clock and there's no doubt a conversation has occurred - he knows the importance and the weight his decision will carry.

Take this with an extreme grain of salt, but I had a friend at the Reed Sheppard experience this yesterday, and they said it looked like Sheppard and family were taking everything in and it seemed like a final goodbye

First off....he gone.... But I 100% agree that Cal's "toxic culture" or 1-n-Done plan is DEAD. Thankfully.
Honestly, it felt like once we crapped the 2015 bed, we lost the last little bit of Kentucky basketball culture and slipped right into the ebb and flow of the whims and personalities of the sporadic freshmen. That's to be expected, but without a Miller or Harrellson who's built rapport and connection with the fans and school, there's no "glue."

God bless Reeves. He was the closest we've had to that in years. Left it on the court every single game this year.

Reed will be a lotto pick next year too. I think he's gone, and maybe SHOULD be gone, but what happens between him, his parents, and Pope this weekend could seal it one way or another. I do think that of all the coaches we could've hired, Pope helps with Reed. A lot. If not the most.

I think reed would be insane to come back, I would love if he did, but if you're a lottery pick you gotta go man. Thankfully this year is the end of completely new rosters year in and year out.

Imo it's disgusting the level of pressure the local media is putting on one kid to try to sell this underwhelming hire. It isn't his job to risk a lottery selection just to put lipstick on a pig.
Fairly certain local media outlets don't conspire.

If Reed stays, he will make 7 figures and look like Trae Young in this offense. Good chance he’s POTY and still a top 5 pick in 2025.

There’s risk, but things aren’t as dire as some have convinced themselves.

If he comes back it's because they pay him millions n NIL.

We aren't winning anything that matters next year so it isn't to come back and win big.

I’m sure you’re an altruistic good guy that cares about the kid *rolls eyes*

All of this talk about he should go, that’s Cal culture. GTFO this board and go talk about young men going to the NBA at Arkansas’ board.

It better be for his sake if he continues on at Hogville with what he's been doing here whew, I'm not afraid at all.
We saw with our own eyes skinny freshman battling grown men laughing all year

To the people making declarative statments that he is gone for sure, you don't have inside info, so why pretend you do? Nobody knows for sure. UNCheat had a lottery pick return a few years back. It might be unlikely, but it's not out of the question.

He could be a SEC POTY idk about national player of the year. It will be very interesting to see how pope builds this roster for sure

If wasn't a few years back...

It was Armando Bacot, and it was LAST year.

They're already wealthy and he will make as much money at UK as he would on an NBA rookie deal.

No reason to go pro unless he just wants to go pro.
I'll just add on to this by saying he clearly let the lights of the tournament get to him. The lights in the NBA only get brighter and the completion better.

Think he would be on the short list for national. Everybody loves him and he was national freshman of the year off the bench.

Who would be at the top of your list?

We haven't won anything in a decade and guys still stayed.🤷‍♂️

We have made a final four, made a couple elite 8s and won some sec tournaments and sec regular season the lasrt decade.

Is it national title or bust? I wouldn't put that pressure on pope.

I'm talking about winning the SEC, SEC tourney, making a final four or winning a national title. We aren't doing any of that next year. A

If a kid is borderline and/or can improve their stock - that's one thing. He will never be higher than now. Never. Asking him to come back to sell this hire is incredibly selfish

I've been saying all along that Reed may return (that it was close to 50/50). And that is/was regardless who the coach would be next year (including Cal). The Sheppard's wouldn't have let Cal push Reed out the door, and I'm sure he knew that. And part of that was that unlike many, he isn't expected to remove his family from generational poverty. There are both personal reasons and financial reasons (not just NIL) why Reed might choose to return.

But it's not just Cal, it's common everywhere now for a projected lottery pick to leave.

What are you talking about selling a hire?

Are you a narcissist that thinks that Mitch Barnhart needs your personal approval and because you’re unhappy about it he needs to sell it to you?

Hurley just turned down 100 million, there’s more to life than money. You don’t think Reed would come back for legacy reasons, or because it’s where he wants to be?

You don’t think Reed could possibly value this place as more than a pit stop in his NBA Career ?

Understand that it is normal for most players to scatter once a new coach is announced. In this case, our players played for a national contender last year (yeah, I know…Kalipari), and it seems they would be playing in a rebuilding program this coming year. Exploring other options, NIL value, professional prospects or just wanting a change in scenery is to be expected. If a player came here to seek a NC then they might well go elsewhere next year where they feel they can better chase that dream. This includes Reed. It is the rare exception (tho it does happen) that a potential lottery pick chooses to return to his school, but that usually only happens when no coaching change has occurred.

Like everyone else, I would love for every member of our current team to stick around. But, having just been smacked back down to reality by this coaching search, I’m working hard to adjust my expectations. Just seems healthier at this point in time.

No? Why not?

I'd say there is better chance UK wins the SEC tournament next year than there was for NC St. to win the ACC tournament this year.

But here we are.
