Nobody has really seen this kid play basketball against a defense that is slavering hungry up in his grill, screaming jihad yet. Further, he’s not had to play that defense yet.he has not played against players as fast or as strong or as smart as what he will face first game. Only time will tell his story. Anyone that says otherwise is just blowing crap trying to get some to stick.

Same is true about every other incoming freshman.

That sounds like the Peyton Siva > John Wall argument. Regardless, you need to lower your expectations for the kid. He's not going to be 1998 Jeff Sheppard.
So, I looked this up. Peyton Siva took UL to two Final Fours and a Championship. If he had done that at UK, is that a better outcome for UK than what John Wall did in his one year? What is the measuring stick - how successful/good a player eventually becomes in the NBA or how many wins (particularly tournament wins) he impacted at UK?

And I believe Shepherd has a chance to be a really good starting college Guard that is good enough and consistent enough to be a big part of a title contender.

After pro day, if it's still pre-season, won't be crow eating time. That'll come at the end of the season. Players' measurables are way down the list of things I'd use to predict future success on the floor. We've seen too many off the chart athletes lately who have very limited skill sets.
Fine, seasoned crow is acceptable but being fast or slow should be setteled on pro day.

He seems to have better fundamental skills than what I have seen from our other recruits including the two guards. However, history shows that Cal will favor the star ratings even if the on court play is not matching what is expected combined with the more athletic. Just remember we have been beaten multiple times by no stars.
You mean like playing Wheeler over Wallace?

Exactly, or Reeves over Livingston, Toppin over Collins, etc. It's time to come up with a new phrase because this is tired and inaccurate at this point.

There are other reasons to be frustrated by Calipari without making up stuff.

Earlier post said he's not going to be 1998 Jeff Sheppard. Good comparison(stupid) since Jeff was a 23-24 year old GAM and Reed is what 18 and can still be growing and evolving as a player. Kid has a ton of upside and I believe that development will come in his FOUR years at UK.

I love JW, and he was a better player, but I'd much rather have PS's results AS A KENTUCKY FAN.

I agree. Shepherd has upside PLUS, if he gives you multiple years, the increased value that comes with experience, skill development and maturity. In my mind that is a heck of a recruiting value.

But I also think Shepherd's good enough to provide real help even as a freshman. He makes plays, and the right plays most of the time. That has a lot of value too. In their freshmen years, I actually expect Wagner and Dillingham to have a bigger impact on winning than Shepherd - and good if they do, they're all playing for our team so who cares. I just think the relative value of any of the freshmen as good as those UK has coming in is exponentially increased if you get multiple years from them.

Reed’s a special player. He’ll surprise a lot of doubters.
I hope he does. I hope he has a Herro type season.

But he looks awfully slow to me.

If he can guard he will play. Cal is not going to have have another bad defensive team in ‘23-24.

We have had 3 straight seasons of porous defense. That has to stop. And it will.

He sure guarded everyone on the summer circuit just fine. Top 10 players too.
The kid is a basketball player.

I agree that any player that cannot guard is going to be hard to play much. But Shepherd doesn't look slow to me. There are certainly quicker Guards, but he doesn't look slow - at least to me. But that's your perception. What came to my mind watching Shepherd in those all-star games is he looked smaller than I thought. Both of our perceptions might be right or may be both off a little. But to me, he definitely did not look close to Herro's height.
