The RP that played at Miami of Ohio will not be the one at UK next year. 1/12 years of good nutrition and muscle building will make him stronger. Now his skill level has three pluses 7’2”. You can’t teach, good hands, and can shot the 3 close to 40%. Kentucky is not for everyone but in his case he ha 2 choices, sit at Miami or try for the big time.. Be an inspiration instead of an afterthought. He’s not here for money, he’s here for us. Rember that BBN

BBN will love Potter. He is unique “Stretch 5“ that fits in Pope’s center at top of key offense.
Pope will play him & let him prove his worth like he did BG - hopefully with better results.
Ky now has 4 Kentucky natives on the roster - 1 Mr Ky & 3 Runner ups - 2 Sweet 16 MVP‘s & 1 All A MVP.

People were hammering the Brazilian, Santos, for his height, but Pope may have been trying to get a guy that can back up PF & C. If you think back to the year we pulled Reid Travis, it's kind of similar to that, where we added Travis to supplement sophomore Nick Richards (Moreno), Montgomery (Ndiaye) and Washington (McBride). Potter could still fit in at center if Santos (or equivalent) could play some 4.

I appreciate him being here and think he could go somewhere and make more money, His size and three point shooting alone would get him some attention in the portal. I hope he has took this time off the court and worked his tail off in the weight room, his inside game, passing, hand strength, ect! It’s hard to find players that size who can shoot the ball like that, and I think it was a great idea to give him the time to develop more skills and add muscle.

I believe if Mark didn’t think he could contribute this season he would’ve surely looked for another Big man more aggressively than he has, well I would hope so. If MM can improve some and stay out of foul trouble, we really only need a few minutes a game from a backup center. Hopefully Reece is good enough to keep us competitive while he’s in the game. He really seems like a good kid and wants to be here, that’s already a plus.

This should not be something to be happy about. That just shows that the head coach has to rely on the benefits of easily recruiting from a state that is largely talent-deficient. Although fans love having the in-state kids on the team for sentimental reasons, that factor is not part of "the assignment."

Reid Travis was two-time First-team All-Pac-12. Santos plays for one of the historically best Euroleague teams in the sport. I pray to God that Potter isn't expected to make half of their impact.

He looks weak and not very skilled. Were talking about this guy playibg chunks of minutes? I guess if Moreno stays in he might need to start lol

You're right. Getting in-state talent is not part of the assignment. Sentiments and nostalgia don't win basketball games. However, I'm all for getting Kentucky kids that would appear to move the needle (i.e. Moreno, Sheppard, Stokes, Kinney, Jasper, etc.).

I’ll take Potter over BG everyday & twice on Saturday.
so you named 5 in state talents that you expected to win - proves Ky does have good HS basketball.

Also, he has to be better because he is at Kentucky. That at least makes him All SEC!

Potter is a known quantity— over two full seasons he wasn’t good enough to get rotation minutes in the MAC. In the SEC he’s a break glass emergency third string post player.

Would think UK is likely to sign some older European big; that’ll be a much better option than Potter.
Starting 11 games as a freshman and playing 17 minutes per game as a sophomore isn’t rotation minutes?

He averaged 20mpg in their conference tourney as a sophomore.

I think he can contribute in the SEC as a RS junior.

What in the world do you base that on? In Potter’s second season at Miami of Ohio he had zero starts, 5.6 fouls per 40 minutes, and averaged 17 mpg for a Mid American Conference team. And that was an improvement over his first year there. That 3pt shooting percentage was on very low volume btw. And even at 7’2” he was a zero star recruit.

In 60 games Potter has a career high of eight rebounds, and his career high for points is 19… against Sacred Heart… in a blowout in which he came in off the bench and all of his three pointers went in.

Garrison was really inconsistent but at least he had talent that in theory could be developed.

UK will pick up a more experienced foreign player no doubt.

Potter played rotational minutes at Miami OH including 11 starts his freshman year & 17 minutes a game as a sophomore . He averaged over 6 pts both years. MAC may not be the SEC but the league games are very competitive.

By “averaged over 6 ppg” you mean to say 6.0 ppg one year and 6.5 the next, on 45% fg shooting for a 7’2” post, in the MAC.

Garrison shot about 10% higher from the floor, and against SEC teams.

-If Potter wasn't from Kentucky would you still want him over Brandon Garrison? As a freshman at Big 12 Oklahoma State, Garrison had better stats than Reece Potter ever did at MAC Miami of Ohio.

-There’s been several Kentucky-born kids that have been really good. HOWEVER, typically they leave to go to better programs (D'Angelo Russell, Jasper Johnson,Taylin Kinney, Tyron Stokes, etc.). They don't stick around to play against Kentucky schools, due to the lack of talent in the state. Reed and Malachi are the first McDonald's All-American from the state to spend all four years in the state since Scotty Hopson (2008).

Define rotation minutes. He played double digit minutes both years at Miami.

Stats. Basing it off his stats in the MAC. It's like people initially not liking the Pope hire. It has nothing to do with hate, but strictly no sign of significant quality.
I'm all for stats. But they don't take in to account a redshirt year of growth, and practice against SEC level players. The coaching staff has more information than we do.
The hate part is based on Tweaks post record.

Excellent question:

His first year at Miami of Ohio, he was tenth on the team in minutes per game.

His sophomore year at Miami of Ohio, he was eighth on the team in minutes per game.

I guess you could accurately state “in the extended rotation.” At a MAC school.

I was a big fan of Reid Travis. I honestly thought he would be better when he played here but he was solid. I completely forgot about him to be honest. When was that? Just before Covid?
