Our recruiting, and that of every other big time school in America, feels like what the mid-majors have been doing for years. We are looking at the transfer portal, scouring the juco's for instant help, hope to land two or three top 50 guys, and then fill the bench with 4 to 5 guys who joined up just for fun. Schools like Wichita State, Kansas State, Iowa State, and others have done this for years and occasionally make a run, i.e. Wichita State in 2014. How long will this continue? Will this end when Cal leaves? Coach K? I mean, is it the coaches playing the hand being dealt?

The difference is now the big schools are going after the best players available, not just from high school. The smaller schools you mentioned did it to get older experience or under rated players since they couldn't compete for the top high school kids. Now that transferring is easier for top talent already in college, big schools would be dumb not to recruit them as much as top high school kids. I don't care if the players come from high school, transfers or the moon, long as the team is contending for a final four.

I think it will continue to happen for a while, not as many in the portal in the future like this year. Teams will continue to pick the best players from Mid Major teams. I see Kansas as a major player with transfers. We might get 1-2 a year going forward. But we will also lose players like normal.

Too much uncertainty about what the top high school "kids"
will or won't do. Time is best spent other places. The new 5*
ain't what they used to be.

Sounds like what Pitino was doing while he was at UK.

Not sure why Duke is included with Kentucky--they have Banchero, Griffin, Keels (all 5 stars) and are now seriously back involved with Patrick Baldwin Jr as well. They were able to move their weakest recruiter to a Head Coaching job (Nate James) promoted Nolan Smith and that move alone got them Trevor Keels. See the picture of Nolan's stepdad and notorious drug dealing felon stepdad Curtis Malone at Team Takeover practice?

When you are facing the end of your life, let alone coaching career, you just don't give a **** anymore. Coach K isn't going to be taking a backseat in recruiting. Jon Scheyer punked UK staff by taking Paolo Banchero from them, but at least they got Jaden....well Hunter.......nevermind. Thank god for Jai Lucas! Hope he gets some help soon.

Nobody was talking about Duke with Banchero--UK staff was cocky and thought they led for him and had this done. Then look where he ends up. Duke handled this quietly and Scheyer is a very good recruiter. Remember that garbage talk of "Well Capel is gone, now they won't get anyone" which was nonsense. Scheyer is a strong recruiter. Now they dumped the guy who was similar 3/4 of the UK staff now (Nate James) to promote Nolan Smith. They improved recruiting by not being afraid to make changes.

UK made 1 change that a program like UK should be making and it's paid off with their best recruit (Collins) and has them in deep with TyTy Washington. You can't go big game hunting with guys who carry butter knives to go for the kill. Hopefully this hint of more changes takes place. Funny how the results improve when you bring in killers instead of people who make excuses for why things don't get done or are incapable of winning an elite recruiting battle.
