To HCSF and his staff. They really know how to work things, how to tee up "plan B" guys and how to go after what they need. There was a question a bit ago on whether or not HCSF could recruit or not.

Since we've joined the B1G, under Bo and Riley we averaged just a bit above 6 4-stars per year. Really, 2011 and 2017 make the average sound better. Multiple years it was 4, 5 or 6. Under HCSF, he recruited 9 4-stars in 2018 (caveat that only 4 are still around), 11 in 2019 and 10 so far in 2020 with the day not over yet.

Under Bo and Riley, our average recruiting classes were ranked around 23rd. So far under HCSF, we are averaging around 17th. This is a massive infusion of talent. It all starts with getting the guys in the front door.

My biggest criticism on the recruiting front has been on player development. Can they actually get the guys onto the field in a productive capacity. 2018 obviously didn't bode well with something like 50% of that class gone including most of the 4-stars. We only have 3 4-stars left from the Riley years (Dismuke, Raridon, and McQuitty).

So, we shall see what happens. I am hopeful that the future is bright and this infusion of new talent is going to take us places.

Good to hear. I got amped up on player quotes too. Mo Barry had a lot to say too. I think I’ll wait for game time.

Wandale has EARNED the right to let the fans know what's up. Freshman All American.
No problem. Hoping he’s right, but will simply opt to smile when players, coaches, and s&c staff start blathering about what they WILL BE and instead watch what they ARE when they play the game.

So after all the dust has settled, I think this is a solid B/B+ effort from HCSF and the guys. Across all 3 major services, they are roughly 20th right now (247 20th, ESPN 20th, Rivals 18). A few teams that normally recruit well are under us and could move ahead by Feb (Texas for examples is top 10 on ESPN and 247 but only 21st on Rivals with only 17 recruits).

Given 3 losing seasons and only 9 wins under HCSF, they still did a phenomenal job in getting a load of 4-stars and some good 3-stars to commit late. It is a solid class with some much needed position upgrades and filling some holes.

At some point though, we have to be able to compete with the North Carolinas, TN, Washingtons of the world and get more solidly in the teens and push for those top 10 finishes. Realistically hard to do with our current W-L record of course. But I think this is as well as could be expected from our coaches. I still think they are phenomenal on the recruiting trail.

The other point to consider is that while we always say we out recruit the B1G West, that gap is closing considerably. Most of the west schools did well this year with a number of them in the 20s across the services.

Frost addressed this somewhat yesterday. Said they basically had 3 weeks to recruit that class and they didn't get the time they wanted to really dig into kids characters. They just filled the class as quickly as possible with kids that they knew they had a shot at. I think what we are seeing is there was a reason that some of those kids were still available that late in the cycle. I think from here on out we will see much more retention.

Seriously, you are going with a Gerry Dinardo observation after his glowing observations on the B1G tour? You are trying waaay too hard.

Frost and coaches did a fantastic job recruiting!!! Will it translate to wins? Hope so. I say I’ll wait and see the product on the field. If that makes me a hater, then so be it.

Taking the number of jucos we did doesn't really help with rankings. Jucos are ranked about half a star to a full star lower than what an equivalent high school talent is. If we took nothing but high school kids, we could probably be in the top 15 but we wouldn't be addressing our needs.

And most of those "four star" players were still available for a good reason. They weren't Turner Corcoran type four stars who everybody wanted. The 2018 four stars included Dominick Watt for example.

I've especially enjoyed hearing Scott talk about the recruits in his press conference as well as what I have heard during his sports nightly interview. I think they worked pretty hard in recruiting and got some better than expected results. How it pans out, who knows, but I was really encouraged by the reflective nature of things that coach said, and that actually makes me way more bullish on next season than I previously was. He spoke at some length on not comparing incoming guys to prior players and such to let each guy develop on his own merits. He also spoke about recruiting more size after seeing the league up close the past two years and some other tidbits that were really encouraging.

This recruiting haul turned out better than I expected. Nice work by this young staff. Recruiting can always be better, but for a program that has been off-track for a while, this has been a positive sign. Short of bringing in a lightning rod recruiter, we just need to exercise patience and let this young staff continue to grow, recruit, and develop talent.

I take what Gerry says with a grain of salt. However in this case I believe he is right. For this young staff to be able to pull in 2 top 20 classes with 3 straight losing seasons is very impressive. I would only imagine if and when we start winning 8-10 games that they should easily be able to pull in top 10. Bo Bo struggled getting top 25 classes with 9 win season.

It looks like Solich’s classes in the early 2000s were pretty weak. Same with Pelini’s last few classes.

Those were the days we were convinced that "stars don't matter". Recruiting services have improved tremendously and very few top-tier guys go unoticed these days. Very happy with Frost and Co. in going after big time guys that are winners. We just have to KEEP THEM and DEVELOP THEM.

Those stats from Ryan King making the twitter rounds are great. They really show the level of recruiting that has been missing. Especially the efficiency of the staff and the quality if the recruits. If we can keep this kind of success while winning more games and bowling, I have fewer doubts about eventually cracking top 10 classes.
