NU back in the Osborne days would recruit athletes who were just generally good football players and find them a place to play on the field. Heck Bo even did that some- Niles Paul, Cody Glenn, the WR he made into a CB etc
NU RIGHT NOW is recruiting a bunch of kids without well defined positions for THIS team:
LeGrone- TE/WR
Jurgens- TE/LB
Miles Jones-- WR/RB/Slot
Casey Rogers- DE/OLB/TE
Matthew Tago- QB/LB
Nikko Hall- WR/DB
Henry- Slot/RB
Benning said- this staff more than others in the past seems to be betting on the COACHING STAFF being able to coach up athletes into the position that has the greatest level of need. He said some past staffs had to see a perfect fit into what NU was doing at the time. Where this staff can just take a great athlete who is also a football player and see the potential that player may have for doing something they might not have already done a bunch of. They believe in their ability to coach that potential, hence taking less well defined by position kids.
Benning talked about how Frost did that with some of the kids on his CFU team. He also talked about not being limited by what most think the tangibles must be. He's not afraid to start a short OG or tiny RB- or an OT that is less than 6'5 or a LB who weighs less than 220- they see potential, they love effort and they figure out ways for the kids they do have to maximize their potential.
I think back to Osbornes day
Who was the great Omaha Benson QB that ended up moving to Defense and being a great DB?
Bobby Newcombe did pretty well as a returner and Receiver- moved from QB.
They moved kids from Safety to LBs
LBs to DE
Others?
