Willie was talking on the PSU weekly show that they are thinking about bringing RAF to North Korea.
Willie should definitely travel there to cover that.
And Willie, please don't forget to draw a mustache on posters of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
I hear (from a very high source!) that Comrade Kim's an easy-going guy and loves a good joke. ;)

I’ll get there one day, fighting as good as your boys. lol.
With the recruting calender changing i forget when can schools start contacting 2028 recruits?

I think this one went way over your head as I was giving you a compliment for trying to keep the thread on topic in regard to recruiting.

But, carry on as you see fit.

Ok. Stand by for a multi page history lesson.
Part 1:
The main thing is that what people have to realize is, in 97 NATO began to expand. ‘91 the Soviet Union collapses, the Warsaw Pact comes apart, all these nations become independent nations that were historically part of the Russian Empire. So in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, the thing about Russia is that they're so big that their foreign policy is based on, like any country, defending their borders. Russia has this big geography problem where it's so big and it's got such a great border, and it's situated in such a precarious place where it's difficult to defend these borders. So what its foreign policy is motivated by is finding the best way to defend its borders. So what it has to do in Eastern Europe, to make it quick, is they have to shorten their border with the west. The great European plane is shaped like a funnel and in East Germany it's at its smallest part, and then the further east you go the more it opens up.

So Russia, to defend its western border, it wants to make that border as small as possible. So Russia has to expand westward in order to have a defensible border. The farther east it goes, the moreland there is to defend, the more open flat land that they have to defend, so you know this is why the Russian empire expanded west. This is why the Soviet Union had the warsaw pact and was its furthest westward point was in was in East Germany

So in 91 when the Soviet Union collapsed and all these countries became independent. That's why Putin says it's a geopolitical disaster because now Russia's at its smallest point its population is halved and it loses lots of resources and lots of land.

In 97 NATO begins expanding and it starts moving eastward towards Russia - which is like they're coming at Russia with like a dagger towards the throat of Moscow (geographically). So what happens is they keep moving eastward and you know all the former Warsaw Pact countries go to NATO. Now Russia is very vulnerable. Russia is recovering from the collapse of the Soviet Union and they are trying to piece back together the empire. Their bulwark is Belarus and Ukraine. Ukraine has the Crimea Peninsula which gives them control of the Black Sea. Russia also doesn't have year-round ports where they have access to the sea because their ports freeze so this is one of their only year-round ports, which gives them access to the Eastern Mediterranean, so it's also important for that reason.

Part 2:

So NATO is expanding eastward, but they have Belarus and Ukraine they had Yanukovych who was the leader of Ukraine until 2014 - He's pro-Russian he crushes NATO/EU membership for Ukraine in 2014. Then there's a color revolution and the American intelligence agencies overthrow Yanukovych in Kiev. They sponsor these protests (like they did in many Eastern European countries) and they installed Poroshenko who's a Pro-NATO/Pro-EU leader. And this opens the door for Ukraine to join NATO/EU.

This is unacceptable for Russia because Ukraine becoming part of NATO puts NATO’s border right up against Russia's and it puts NATO a hundred kilometers from Moscow - which is just an unacceptable posture. It strips Russia of its ports, strips them of the Black Sea fleet, they can't access the Black Sea in winter… To give you an idea, this is like if Russia invaded Mexico or Cuba or Canada. Like that's the equivalent threat. So Russia then, in 2014 invades Crimea to secure their port, And by the way, Crimea is ethnically Russian. They speak Russian, they’re historically part of Russia, and they also sponsored the separatists in Donbass in Eastern Ukraine. They did this because as long as there's a war going on, investment companies can't come in and invest in shale oil in Ukraine. Also Ukraine can't become part of NATO and EU (too unstable). So they're destabilizing Ukraine, and then finally Putin makes these demands here in 2022.

Putin says “look just promise that Ukraine will never become part of NATO, stop doing drills in Eastern Europe, and stop expanding - freeze NATO membership where it is. You're trying to destroy Russia”. Remember what happened? USA would not even come to the negotiating table. So Russia invaded. I think that, all things considered, when you look at it with that longer view of history, it’s clear NATO is the aggressor here. NATO will not allow Russia to have a reasonable security posture. Russia doesn’t want world domination like we do. They want to defend their borders. They want to have a reasonable sphere of influence. Frankly it's just not statesmen like what we've been doing. It's like this hubris - we're trying to keep control of the world like we had 30 years ago but it's not 30 years ago. America's not as strong (relatively) in the world as we once were and so we need to negotiate with China and Russia and India and Brazil. Things are moving towards a more multi-polar world order. That's the direction the world is going in. If we are going to try to defend every last inch of land that we thought we controlled after the Cold War ended, we're going to cause World War 3. That American unipolar moment where we controlled everything was an anomaly. NATO has been the aggressor when it comes to Russia.

Now this meatgrinder of a conflict has been going on for four years and here we are. It would’ve been over a while ago if he hadn’t poured so much money into it and continued down this path. And now half of you midwits sit around and talk about Russia or sanctions without realizing what led us here.

And your post didn't sound like just a history lesson. It sounded like a rationalization for Putin's attempt to recreate the post-WWII Russian Empire. That didn't work out so well for Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Most of those countries are happy to be outside of Putin's sphere of influence, and hope to stay that way.

He's not totally wrong about NATO/US.

Russia has tried to join NATO multiple times, and been rejected. They SHOULD have been let in immediately following the death of Joseph Stalin. We'd all be in a much better place. But the US blocked it.

When they were rejected in the 50s, and 2000s, I kinda get it - They were never going to share the same values that NATO strictly adheres to (namely - civilian control of the military)

World History nerd here. Sorry.

This is total BS

Russia kept all the lands on their way to Berlin during and after WWII They exploited the people and lands until the economic system of Communism totally broke down. The vast majority of those countries were eager to achieve independence and thrived thereafter.

Putin is trying to gain back as much of these lands as possible for further exploitation. Naturally these countries ran for the cover of NATO. NATO, anyone else has designs upon taking over Russia or any other er eastern Block country. Putin makes up this BS as a narrative and excuse for his adventurism.

Russia in NATO, you have got to be kidding. Do a little research yourself from the Russian Revolution forward, and don't pick books from Putin library.

Be better Komrad.

Putin himself requested to be in NATO on multiple occations. Exact quote, "When are you going to invite us to join NATO?"

Now obviously, Putin is Putin, and the US and European delegations just believed he wanted to join to increase the sphere of Russian influence. No one believed he had anything BUT ill intentions. But we would likely all be in a better spot had they been allowed in. Particularly after the "fall of communism" - Gorbachev too asked to join Nato.

No VBaby No. United Nations part 2 if Russia is in NATO. NATO is already weak. You'd make them completely ineffective with Russian influence. Just who is trying to take over Russian territory or even thinks of it? Russia had, has and will continue to have imperialistic ambitions and actions.

Eh. Not post Stalin and not Gorbachev.

Putin? FOR SURE. The problem is, as Americans, we make everything a zero sum game, as if we don't have the same intentions when it comes to influence and resources. Especially after the fall of Communist Russia/Soviet Union - we really had the chance to make them an ally. But we refused to out of both fear and hubris. The world would certainly be in a better place and we likely don't make enemies out of China as well.
