It seems like we have some decent, younger coaches who can go get the 3-stars and an occasional 4-star. Can't we hire a "lightning rod" recruiter? Someone with proven abilities to jump-start our talent gains? Otherwise, it seems like we're in the rowboat paddling upstream.

Riley had the Williams' who were very good recruiters. I don't think our guys are bad recruiters, lack of winning has hurt us imo. Tough to sell with a 9-15 record. Let's see how they close out.

Frost was that guy at Oregon I believe.

Frost has said in the past that he doesn’t need to hire an ace recruiter. That’s not something I would agree with.

Imagine the two Williams' instead or Walters and DeWitt, we would have a lot better luck on the recruiting trail.

We out recruit everyone in our division every year, it's not the problem. Development and consistency of scheme has been. Fix those, win more and make it easier to get even better talent.

Well, it wouldnt be DeWitt

Keith W (WR) - Walters (WR/OC)
Donte W (CB/S?) - Fisher (CB/S?)

Dewitt is OLB/ST

But I get the point... I wonder how this staff would be different if Walters would have gotten the UCF job.

I don't see our recruiters measuring up. They are young and may be pulling their weight for what they're paid, but to compete with the big boys I think we could invest more in an ace recruiter.

Donte Williams is coaching OLB at Oregon now.

Lack of success on the field hurts recruiting, no doubt about it. Also, our facilities are merely average now. Lincoln is a cool city but so are a lot of places, and in much warmer climates. Our “brand” isn’t as strong with the current recruits since it has been decades now since we were an elite team.

I am amazed these coaches can overcome all of that to recruit as well as they have. We won’t get elite athletes overnight. We need to build up to that. Begin by recruiting talent that is good enough to win the West. Establish ourselves as the new Wisconsin and win the West most years. Then, with the new facilities things can take off from there.

I get what you're saying, but what is preventing us from infusing this program with a lightning rod recruiter? Just $$$? We didn't build any recruiting capital this season. Not sure the slow rowboat upstream is the best we can do.

I have no issue at all with your suggestion. But it presumes the coaches we have are not great recruiters. I think they are.

I think some are pulling more than their weight. But I think the successful programs are bringing more weight.

Frost is in fact a very good recruiter but you can never have too many. Winning is the best recruitment tool you can have though. Have to start winning close games.

2017 20th

Frost Recruiting Staff Rankings

I've never really thought recruiting was an issue. I really don't this season either. Our goal should be to compete for the B1G West on a yearly basis. We already recruit well enough for that. Our problem is we don't develop or keep our talent. That is what needs fixing. Part of that is staff stability, which we haven't had in awhile.

I realize everyone thinks we need to finish top 20 recruiting every year. But we aren't competing with tOSU, 'Bama, Clemson or anyone else like that right now. I'm not saying we can't get there someday, but that day isn't now. We are competing with Purdue, NW, Wisc, MN, Iowa, etc. Until we can consistently beat those teams, looking beyond is just a waste of time.

So I'm fine with how they are currently doing. I want them to focus more on keeping players they have recruited on the team as productive guys.

We’ve gotten the best OT recruits we’ve had in years three straight years now. Austin seems to be doing better than the previous staffs.

Edit: After a quick search, Austin’s best player per class so far:

Prochazka #55 overall, 5.9, #9 OT
Corcoran *** overall, 6.0, #7 OT. - *** National ranking are removed and will be rereleased soon
Benhart #139 overall, 5.9, #18 OT
W. Farniok 5.5 center - transition class

Previous staffs best OL per class:
Jamies no national rank, 5.9, #61 OT
Raridon #156 overall, 5.9, 9th OG
Barnett no national rank, 5.8, 25th OG
Farmer #82, 5.9, #4 OG
Hannon no national rank, 5.7, #22 OG
Thurston #147 overall, 5.8, #14 OT
Moore #67 overall, 5.9, #5 OT
Hardrick JUCO - 5.9
Ash no national rank 5.7, #28 OG
Steinkuhler #8 overall, 6.1, #2 OT (5,6 Grant if you want to say Baker was a DT)

Pretty telling how good of a job Austin’s done.

You can tell the guys who will resonate with 17 year old kids....Frost, Austin, Fisher, Walters are salesmen. My issue with Chin isn't his scheme or coaching, it is actually the vibe he gives with recruits. Him and Dewitt just can't hold a room. How many defensive recruits came to play for Chin? They come to play for Frost or Fischer or maybe Ruud. The fact that our defense hated to take the field also speaks to the fact that Chin didn't connect with them. A defense who plays through their coach is one that can't wait to play, can't wait to win the game. In fairness our offense also looked like it wanted to sit out, especially in close game. I felt that they accidently fell into winning the game against Iowa and then pumped the breaks and , um, no way...we don't want another game.

Isn’t Chins responsible for the Iowa defensive recruits? M. Newsom and Gunnerson?

Yuck, Vals stinks. It’s not pizza. Runza, on the other hand, is awesome.
Val's used to be the Cadillac of pizza. I don't know if my taste has changed or if they did but I don't like it as much as I did 30+ years ago. Maybe an actual made to order pizza is better than their buffet. I did stop there a year ago and their double pepperoni and cream cheese was great

Not sure I agree about not building recruiting capital, unless you are referring to record... as it stands, we’ve gotten some dang good recruits committed, and if the newest recruiting thread about KJ pans out, that helps even more. But if you are referring solely to record, then you are right.

In my view, recruiting capital is tied to on the field progress. We only showed that there are plenty of opportunities to play right away. Trying to make a positive out of a negative situation.

Adding a lightning rod recruiter can only help.

Keith Williams was WAY overrated as a recruiter ..all of his misses are what got us where we are with depth in the WR room

He was a really good coach and AMAZING in the hype category
