Reclassifying = New 1-and-Done

It may be. It seems as the NBA moved a year back, so will college basketball. At some point the NBA isn't going to want to give 16 and 17 year olds contracts (or maybe they can't by law). There will be a point that the NBA doesn't find it worth their time for such raw and undeveloped talent.

I disagree, and don't think there's a new reclassifying trend. Almost all guys who reclassify do so because they were held back for basketball as kids, and they're reclassifying back to their original class.

The reclassification trend , in which the Cats are a prime participant , just widens the experience gap between UK teams and many other contenders . ( Not that there is anything wrong with that )

From what I’ve seen, everyone reclassifying is actually just graduating when they would have normally. For years, guys have been playing in prep school as a “senior” in high school, when they’d ordinarily be a freshman/gap year age.

A lot of kids now go into their senior year just needing a couple credits to graduate. With all the advance and dual credit classes, high school students are getting more done sooner. Getting those last credits and skipping that senior year is more attainable.

As is typical, Coach K is at the forefront of a shady recruiting tactic. He has been using reclassification for years, only when it suits the needs of the team (the kids who reclassify for him aren't so lucky). What bothers me is that Coach Cal gets all the negative press because he knew that the goal of top kids was to get to the NBA so he recruited them on the idea, got them to class during their time in Lexington, and taught them how to play defense and succeed in the NBA. He did things the right way and gets excoriated in the media while Coach K cuts corners (Bagley was barely eligible his junior year in high school, yet completes his senior year in 3 months and is immediately eligible) and uses some of the kids (Dawkins for example) and is showered with praise by the media.

It makes sense. A lot do get held back to get bigger and stronger to match up better. Have seen it since I was in grade school and saw fellow St. Helens BB players being held back LOL. I do think we will see tons more reclassing and kids spending 3 years in HS. I mean why not if you're ready. You get to experience 3 years of HS, then 1 year of college before going pro. Then if you find out you need another year like Ashton then so what. You get to experience more and I think it will make for better pros than just skipping college to go pro. Looking at it from the kid's point of view you still get to the league in about the same time but get to play for a National Title instead of another year of HS.

You might be on to something here. And it seems like Cal is ahead of everyone else on this. UK seems to be getting more players to reclassify than anyone else. Look for the NCAA to step in to stop UK from taking advantage of this.

Man no! It doesn’t mean we’ll get less talented kids. It’s been said a hundred times right in this thread that most of these kids ( I’ll say 85-90%) are just jumping back to their original class because they stayed back to mature and get stronger. And really? Less experienced???

Dude by the time these kids are 13 years old now, they have traveled all over the country playing basketball! They also play a hundred games a year or more with school, and all the summer leagues. If anything, kids today play three times the amount of basketball as they did even ten years ago. So there’s nothing but positivity from Coach Cals point of view and he’ll get the best players in high school just like always.

You’re just trying your best to find something negative to say about it and it’s just not here. Not for Kentucky anyway. Nothing is going to stop Cal from getting the best of the best. Try thinking about the positives first, then write something.

The NBA is still going to require players to be or turn 18 (the normal age of a HS graduate) the year they enter the draft, which means a player isn't really going to be able to game the system by graduating early.

As mentioned, Jarnell Stokes was close to a legit 3 year HS player (though it was 3 1/2), and there might be a few others, but the vast majority of reclassifying kids are moving back to their proper class. It might actually become less popular if the NBA gets rid of one and done, because kids will know they can enter the draft without worrying about college at 18 or 19.

Kira Lewis for Alabama. Andre Dawkins and one of the Murphy brothers graduated early and went to Duke during their true senior years, but that’s longer ago than the last few years. You will see some parents 5-10 years from now who were forward thinking and will find ways to accelerate their kids education to capitalize on these types of opportunities. So it could certainly become more common, but I’m doubtful it will become the norm.

Maybe we can just start paying kids like your favorite school Duke does. That way, we can pay more than the rookie minimum and compete with Duke's payscale they guys like Bagley and Zion?
