I don't have the same opinion but I've read enough history to notice what happens when a country/civilization starts tearing down a bunch of statues and monuments. There is a reason we teach history in schools.

The reason we teach history in schools is because statues and monuments are poor excuses for history. They reflect the idolatry of their time and almost always represent a skewed view of history and the person being honored.

But the Taliban had good intentions destroying all of those monuments and are really good people deep down in their hearts.***

So were you happy that the Iraqis tore down the Saddam Hussein statue? After all, he was the leader of that country for a long time.

Yes and we generally use "books" in schools.

Do statues and monuments prevent people from reading?

I really don't get why we don't just add plaques to or beside the monuments explaining the history, especially if it's awful history. We shouldn't want people to forget how horrible it was or how recently some of the statues were put up. It's very easy for younger generations to forget just how close in time some very awful things are. While I was taught about everything horrific involved with civil rights, it embarrassingly it didn't click with me just how close in time that was until I got out of high school and I talked to some older black co-workers that told some stories about their early career and what it was like. Another random tidbit that helps put it in perspective for me was knowing that Emmet till was murdered sometime in the 50's, which seemed like ancient history to me in high school, until I found out his mother was still alive into the early 2000's.

Agreed. Kinda wild how many deadheads being thrown out on that post. My man Landry speaking with clear eyes and full heart on this one.

There is a clear difference in statues built decades after the fact and statues one builds of themselves. Ol’ Saddam was the latter and is not germane to the current discussion.

Nope. But when it comes to statues, don't you find it remarkable just how much Mississippi celebrates one particular 4 year stretch of history?

No, it makes perfect sense considering our history and the attitudes of a lot of the citizenry when many of the statues were put up. Which is another reason it seems like we should add a plaque explaining them and keeping them up as a reminder.

I'd argue they are quite similar. Both are meant to intimidate the minority class and anyone looking to challenge the rulers, and make damn sure they know who's in charge.

Of course you would, I’d expect nothing less from you. How does statues of Lincoln, Jackson, Grant, and Columbus make damn sure “they” know who is in charge. The majority of these were built after the honoree had long been dead, what exactly are they in charge of?

The ones they tore down when they rose to power? Will be hard to get the history books they burned back.

Confederate statues in public places, like courthouses, are just this^^^^ They were erected to remind the black populace of who was in charge, and that the "rules" might be changing, but nothing was really going to change. We could have an awesome Confederate History Museum in Jackson if they were collected and placed there for historical educational purposes. Not one single person who passes one of these statues is being educated on history. They are being educated on what happens when hatred of fellow man is in power. If people are all about history, they can take the time to go research each removed statue and report back on who put it in place, when and why.

Putting a plaque in place is just as much of a farce as the 2 flag proposal.

You really haven't heard about how white people in Mississippi made damn sure black people knew who was in charge?

I can promise everyone on this board that tearing down confederate statues will not lead us to repeating our history of slavery.

I believe that the implied subject was confederate statues in MS. Otherwise you can avoid my post below. It would make no sense in the context of what you referenced above.

This could be a case of us both seeing what we want to see. But the vast majority I have seen on OM board want the flag changed, much like here. Of course you’ve got a very vocal minority that don’t want it changed that drive the # of posts defending it up, but it’s the same 3-4 people. I got tired of arguing with those 3-4 people, and just quit.

I’ll also say that I rarely see MSU fans referred to as racist on the OM 247 board. Not saying it doesn’t happen, but I genuinely can’t remember seeing that.

17 nazis, but the Kaiser wasn't wasn't exactly awesome either. But yeah somehow we know about both, without having monuments.

A few schools teach history. A lot of schools teach revisionist history. This is why we have a bunch of uneducated idiots in the streets tearing **** up.

Every statue of every human ever erected is put there to commemorate something, but it doesn't mean they were perfect or were above reproach (outside of Jesus). They were human after all. It's possible that Andrew Jackson did a tremendous amount of good for this country, while also doing some bad stuff. There's nuance in everything. Today's cancel culture isn't interested in nuance.

I don't see Mississippi celebrating "one particular 4 year stretch of history." But then again, I'm not looking for **** that isn't there.
