The next realignment process has been delayed a year. The new conferences will still go into effect in the 2021-2022 school year, this just eliminates the “lame duck year.” I like this because enrollment fluctuates and a school may be 3A size when the realignment figures come out, however when the new conferences actually start 2 years later, enrollment may have dropped to 2A size and they are stuck in 3A for at least 2 years...usually 4. Case in point...Burns...thankfully we were able to move down this year but I digress. Now this might just be a one off...because they are looking to add 5A. They basically already have...but are just calling it “4AA” for now. They have to change the bylaws. But sounds like it’s gonna happen. Just not sure how the classifications are gonna be divided up, or how the playoffs are going to work yet. Should be interesting. The football coaches and AD’s are just going to have to hit the ground running on the scheduling for 2021 and 2022 because of the process being postponed. That’s the only downside to this.

Would also move us back to 5 champions from the current 8 which I support. 4AA is basically Raleigh and Charlotte with a little Greensboro sprinkled in as it is.

Very doubtful but I would be so thrilled!!!

I expect 1A and 5A to have less schools than 2A through 4A and they will not subdivide. Just my personal opinion.

The NCHSAA admin prefers five or six champions in football. Let's have the coaches vote anonymously on how many champions they want and you will see that it is overwhelming a vote for subdividing. During a previous realignment process the five classification option was shown at each of the eight regional meetings. At every single meeting one of the first questions was would football still subivide (ten champions).

Think something like a 12.5%-25%-25%-25%-12.5% would occur for the new classes?

You should expect a lot of split conferences in 1A and 5A that way. I think you're gonna catch a couple schools outside the Triangle, Triad and Charlotte footprints and 1A will have numerous split conferences.

Fine with split conferences if it means reduced travel burdens for schools. Just want to avoid McDowell situations for playoffs.

That is the breakdown that I have seen and it works perfect for football to keep eight champions. 1A and 5A are basically small 1A and 4AA numbers from the football ADMs. The NCHSAA admin wants five state football champions but the schools will to subdivide 2A-4A. Their reasoning will be there are twice as many schools as 1A and 5A plus 25% was the number of teams in those classifications until 2016 season and they had always subdivided so why change. The NCHSAA would counter that the difference in enrollment is not as large in numbers and/or percentage in the middle classes so the competition is equivalent. I get both arguments. As a fan I just want to see the best play the best and less champions affords that for me.
