Has he had any playing time this year? Due to his age, I would expect that he would be ready to play early, no redshirt

He is credited with a solo tackle against USM, but has not made the participation roster since then.
He played in the first game. Only way to RS is medically after a playing a single play.
I think he would have to have suffered a severe injury, and even if he did, the medical redshirt application process wouldn't occur until the end of his eligibility.
The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season ending injury. (Severe)
And the severity of the injury and previous redshirt status shouldn't matter for a medical redshirt?

Must be "season ending". But I personally don't consider that severe. A broken bone that you'll fully recover from can be season ending, but I wouldn't consider it as severe as a torn acl or ruptured achilles that takes months & months of rehab.
The reason a previous redshirt matters is because if you've been previously redshirted, you would have to be approved for a 6th year. That isn't decided until your 5 years of eligibility is up. A medical hardship can be granted after the year you're injured if you've never been redshirted before (see Cedric Jiles his freshman year)

Nope. A player's first medical redshirt is pretty much automatic. As long as you have a documented injury of any kind and didn't play in more than 4 games, and none after the 6th game, you get a medical redshirt. The rule says the injury has to be incapacitating and season ending, but in practice pretty much anything goes.

No it doesn't. Hence how Redmond played the first couple of games this year with pretty close to the same injury Jiles got a medical rs for his first year...
The interesting thing about Dixon is his "walk on" status. MLB generally agrees to pay for 4 years -- so if we do seek a medical redshirt(which seems pretty logical no more than he's been used), then he'd have to go on scholarship or pay his only way his final year...
