1. Well, another game where we just couldn’t put away a pesky mid major team. Rutgers just had no offensive flow tonight, between the aggressive man defense and the occasional 3-2 zone that really made us tentative. We got the lead to 53-40 but then a few lazy passes led to TOs and the lead crumbled to 55-53. Credit to the team for battling back and then finally making plays to push the lead back up.

2. Big props to Dylan Grant for leading the way with 28 points, his career high. Grant looks way more athletic and explosive this year, and he’s getting his points mostly from getting down hill and on FTs. He shot 9-15 overall (1-1 from deep) and was 9-10 at the line.

3. Absolutely fabulous night from the center spot. Ogbole had a DOUBLE DOUBLE with 15 points (7-8) and 10 rebounds, plus 2 nice assists, while Dortch had 7 points (3-3) and 2 rebounds. I could argue that Ogbole was the MVP of the 2nd half because of his offensive rebounds and putbacks that helped us extend the lead despite an off shooting night from outside. There’s no need to question whether Manny’s improved play this year will translate to playing better competition — it’s clear that he has improved and can be relied on to be at least solid.

4. Mixed results from our starting backcourt. JMike was good with 14 points (4-7, 1-2, 5-6 FTs), 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, but although he plays good on-ball defense, he still got beat several times on dribble drives off of high picks. Francis had a bad night period, with just 4 points on 2-7 FG (0-2 threes, ending his streak of 47 straight games with a made three). He did have 6 rebounds and led the team with 4 assists.

5. Pike is much maligned for his rotations during games, but he pushed the right buttons tonight. For example, he sat Francis for a long stretch of the 2nd half, essentially playing Buchanan as the SG, as Francis was struggling. He played Nwuli for a long stretch in the 2nd half to guard that pesky guard Whitlock, who was consistently beating JMike. And he rode Ogbole longer than usual because Manny was crashing the boards and playing rock solid defense in the paint.

6. As a team, we shot better tonight overall at 31-61 (50.8%), but we struggled from deep at just 3-13 (21%). We were a bit better from the foul line at 19-27 (70.4%), with JMike (4-4) and Grant (2-3) combining to go 6-7 in crunch time to lock down the win.

7. We also dominated on the glass, outrebounding Lehigh 45-26, including 14-7 on the offensive glass. BIG shout out to Manny here with all 5 of his offensive rebounds in the 2nd half, when we needed them the most.

8. I didn’t love the defense tonight, giving up 72 points in a nail biter against the 294th KenPom team. Perimeter defense was a problem, as we allowed 9-25 (36%) on threes. And we also struggled with dribble drive off of the multiple high picks. Overall, Lehigh shot 26-61 (42.6%).

9. The freshmen had a spotty night to be kind. Badalau with just 5 points (but 3 assists), but Zrno (0-5, 0-4) and Mark (0-3, 0-1) combined to go 0-8 from the field, including 0-5 from deep. Nwuli did have 5 points in 12 minutes, including a 3-pointer.

My reaction? That preseason European Sniper thread was just the BS PR expected. 12 halves and exactly 1 of 12 halves with a serious impressive performance by the 2. Rutgers 3 of 13 from 3.

Also the shot selection and wild individual efforts under pike continue. Congrats on the win. We're toast in the B1G.

3 games = 6 halves, but your point is still valid.

Badalau at least looks serviceable, but Zrno is really a zero thus far - giving PJ Hayes vibes.

I mean PJ Hayes was > 9 PPG through 3 games last year lol. Zrno doesn’t seem to be at as much of an athletic deficit, but he’s really offered nothing besides an alright-looking jumper

I walked out feeling more down about the season than when I walked in.

Zrno can NOT be a non-factor.

Fall can NOT be a non-factor.

3 games of nothing from either. Everyone else will be up and down, I'm ok with that and accept it. And the freshmen will come on. But we aren't gonna do a thing without those two.

Badalau completely looks the part of a forsb …and is only 19. He has handle , vision to pass and feel for the game . His shot will come at a higher percentage

Zrno is another story. His release is slow and low and will not get his shot off enough.

Guys …..there is a reason we pushed to get jones on the rebound and signed Wooten

we have forwards ….and the guard reinforcements are here for next year

Nice crowd on a Friday night; don't know how many tickets they are giving away - but nice to see full student (and guests) section. And will figure out if, I want to go into the still not good stuff; the didn't see that happening today, next week, next month or anytime this season stuff; or think we have some encouraging young players stuff. Take the win, watch film, and get back on the practice court.

Nice Summary Degaz.
My biggest takeaway is Dylan Grant is exploding in front of our eyes. Last year , Dylan could not wait to jack a 3. This year different player. His handle and strong dribbling has given him the confidence to want to attack the rim anytime he gets the ball and then he takes that first step and then the flush. Damn impressive improvement in 1 off season. Pike kept him on the bench for 6 minutes in the second half and Lehigh overplayed the passing lanes and got steals and converted. Pike is subbing him out at the first timeout in the first half which is a huge mistake. He has Buchanan sub for him when they should play together , as he learned down the stretch. Dylan is not also forcing threes and was a judicious 1-1 tonight and still had 28 points. His foul shooting is also money as he was 9-10 tonight. His entire game has leveled up. Very excited for him to be featured this year.

Manny had his best game of his career with his 16 points and 10 rebounds. He held onto the ball and flushed it numerous times which was a welcome sight. No fumbling , no walking , no hesitating , just straight up flushes. Doubtful we will get this output in conference but if he can give us 8 points and double digit rebounds that will be very helpful.

I think both Buchanan and Nwuili definitely will help us this year with their physicality and Athleticism . Nwuili’s elevation for that alley oop dunk was impressive . Buchanan can penetrate and play bully ball a little . If Badalau is having an off night or Francis has an off night as he was not good all night , then Buchanan can play the 2/3 with Francis sitting and Badalau Buchanan become the 2/3 . This solves some of our concern with the height of our guards in conference play as only JMichael as the point guard.

The Euros had an off night but think Badalau will help us more nights than not. ZRno if he is not hitting threes seems limited defensively as well as the rest of his offensive game. Badalau can do more , dribble , drive , besides the 3 ball.

Bryce will be a good backup at the 5. He actually drove for a bucket and ran the floor on a break getting another bucket. If he can give you anything offensively that will really help at the center position. We took advantage of our height at the center position tonight, something we have hardly done in past years against these out of conference teams
JMichael was steady tonight. He got us into our offense , hit some shots . Would like him to feed our guys better but overall decent night. Defensively a little disappointed he couldn’t handle #1 all night but his defense in the other games has been better this year.

I am less impressed with Francis with every game. He hunts his shot too much and takes some tough or bad shots. His defense will be exposed in conference. No problem having Buchanan , Badalau or Nwuili playing the 2 and having him sit for more minutes. Pike is playing him too much but actually did the right thing tonight and sat his butt after his 2-3 turnovers then committing the flagrant that got Lehigh back in the game from up 13 to a 5-7 point lead.
This team plays hard and is easy to root for and we are starting to see who will be contributors in conference.

Brought my boys tonight to the game and had a great time. I am not sure how or if this will translate to B1G play, but we play as a team and overall give very good effort on both ends of the floor.

It could be a long year, but I also wouldn't be surprised if we knock off some teams we shouldn't too.

This is what the OOC season is all about. Working out the kinks, learning to play together, working on who will be in the rotation and incorporating all the new pieces.
Including two Euros who need to get accustomed to the US game. Let's wait and see. Improvement is not a straight line thing.

Lots of experimenting in this game with minutes for Lino Mark, Nwuli and Fall in the first half. Fall did exactly what he needs to do. Very active on perimeter defense with his mobility and long arms. Had a nice block.

I think he meant 6 halves from Badalau and 6 halves from Zrno, to make his point that between the two, they have one half in which one of them looked spectacular. The two European players look more comfortable playing than the 4 freshman from the U.S. We don’t know how good they will be.

The guys who stayed look better than what we’ve brought in. I can’t be disappointed because my expectations were low. I’ll be surprised if we win any B1G road games but I could see this group grabbing some home wins in rock fights.

The only thing I disagree with you on is Pikiel subbing players in. If it was about winning a single game, you have a good point, but a lot of freshman were worked in to give them experience early in the game. They didn’t play well with the exception of Nwuli, but that isn’t really unexpected.

As for Big Ten play, the players are so tall and athletic that playing time might be dependent on who can match up with them physically and athletically. The ones who I think can play at that level athletically are Grant, Ogbole, Buchanan, Nwuli, Davis, Badalau and Mark. Dortch is undersized as a center and Francis is undersized as a 2 guard so I have concerns with them and don’t know. Mark is small but very fast and athletic. Zrno has height for a guard but may be too slow. Ware and Powers are unlikely to play as they have been relegated to the end of the bench in OOC play. Fall has improved in each game he’s played, but he is very thin and the improvements are in the baby steps stage. However, Fall has improved enough to go from hopeless to a big question mark.

In conference play our frontcourt will be neutralized, and our backcourt will be dominated. I think we have some long days ahead.

Francis probably a 9th/10th man on any other P4 school - he doesn't have the size and I don't like his game.

Grant looking like he's ready to take the lead on this team (crazy to think he wasn't even playing at the beginning of last year)

Nice to see Ogbole have a good game - whether he took a step forward or not remains to be seen. Having a nice game against Lehigh is one thing - getting good production in conference is a whole different thing.

Liked what I saw from Nwuli - still has a ways to go, but there is something there.

I think Badalau will be a key scorer, along with Grant come midseason - I like his game, but obviously needs to get more comfortable.

Bottom line this is a cellar dweller in conference play. Either way I will certainly enjoy rooting for this team more than last year.

Off night shooting threes but not as concerned since none of the shots were forced, no one took more than two and team found other ways to score.

No doubt a good game from Ogbole, but most of his buckets were putbacks following rebounds against a physically inferior team. That’s fine, but without any interior offense action (as opposed to dominating rebounding) the D can focus on defending the perimeter. Less space to defend.

That‘s why RU can‘t hit threes. Same as last year.

There’s never anything to take from anything Pike says about this one or that one really being able to shoot the ball at practice. Everyone knew that or should’ve known that going into the season. Any take aways to try to be drawn have to be on the defensive end. Pike doesn’t complement there if he’s seeing trash. That much we know.

So far not one thing he said has been wildly off about the developments and strengths on D except his comment that we foul too much - ironically. We thankfully haven’t seen that yet - I’m sure it will come at some point.

After 3 games, we’re shooting over 35% from 3 overall. Not bad. I don’t know that we’ll sustain that all season, but for the moment it’s a flavor of the minute complaint based on one game out of 3.

After game one - folks complained about rebounding. We fixed that in the next two games. After game 2, it was lack of interior scoring and FT shooting vs Lehigh. Ogbole puts the complaints that he offers zero offense to rest too. Bryce too.

So now we have a bad perimeter shooting day and folks move on to that I guess. A few complaints about how we have no guards even though at the moment our lead guard features sparking looking YTD metrics. Granted it may not last but come on folks. If this was a blind resume and you didn’t know the players, nothing about this season so far stands out as more concerning than our start in other Pike seasons where we made the NCAAs. Sure - we all still expect that to change when the competition bumps up but folks have to stop this.

Another ranked team - this time Arkansas -pulls off a close one 79-74 last night against Samford. Should we keep a running tally?

Not a complaint. It is what it is. Not having interior scoring talent affects perimeter looks. No team is perfect.

Shelby isn’t even complaining about JMike yet, who’s inarguably played well. We will see if he maintains against good opponents.

Ill note that this team consists of players who dont have the egos that all of the Pike NCAA teams and last years teams had. No positions are guaranteed in the lineup like they were for years as a given and tge team was subject to wild inconsistencies in their performance level

This team is starting from scratch. Its best asset will be its work ethic

Lots of folks trying to spin a web of optimism regarding this team. It’s bad plain and simple and anyone who watches other P4 teams knows it
Well you must have not watched many p4 games cause they've been many against mid majors where even top 25 teams have struggled at times against lesser competition--- take the second half of the Lehigh vs Houstin game for example.

Pike is a development coach. How can you develop a new team every year? I hate this era of basketball.
Pikiel may be showing us how you do it. He kept 4 players who work hard and all appear to have good attitudes. Based on a small sample size, every one of them seem greatly improved, with Grant looking like a really special player. Pikiel also brought in two good transfers, with Buchanan likely to help tremendously in both OOC and Big Ten play. At a minimum, Francis will likely help us in OOC play as the freshman develop. The weak OOC schedule will help the team come together, gain confidence and help develop the freshman like Badalau, who has some professional experience in Europe and Nwuli and Mark who need to get used to college play. Fall also may be playing like a freshman after not getting any meaningful minutes in his first two years of college. They all need time to get up to speed for the real competition that starts in Las Vegas and then Big Ten play. There is talent on this team, but it needs to be coached up for college and then Big Ten play. I am looking forward to seeing what Pikiel can do in one year.

Not sure we don’t have interior scoring talent. Against Lehigh, we had 42 points in the paint and 9 points from 3. Against Rider we had 28 points in the paint and 30 from 3. Against Maine we had 24 pointers in the paint and 24 from 3. From the first 3 games, Rider gave us open 3s and defended the inside so we beat them from the outside. Maine fouled us a lot so we beat them from the line. Lehigh tried to limit 3s so we pounded them inside. Problem will be in Big Ten play, teams can defend us both inside and out without fouling. Have to see who can step up then.

It’s not a one-off assessment. Sure good teams have bad nights. It’s an assessment of individual talent and the general roster construction. If you genuinely see a team built to compete at the P4 level I don’t know what to tell you. I can outline all the reasons why this team is bad but something tells me they’d fall on deaf ears

Nothing has shown me much of anything with this team.
pike did a great job fixing the program but he is just falling so short. I know many keep repeating it is the money…I don’t see that as the problem.
he got the money and money players last year but couldn’t figure out how to use them. The prior year, team was flat.
And now this.
And to step it back to basics- why are our teams always historically crappy at shooting foul shots? I mean- how can it even be possible?
