It was pretty clear after last year his tenure was over. You don’t come back from that type of disaster season.

I predicted he would get this year and the plug would be pulled. A lot is riding on the football game next Saturday. If we win and go to a bowl game that takes pressure off football and I can see us having the intestinal fortitude to pull the plug on hoops. If we lose, which I think we will, then they might double down on Pike, and try to support him with NIL This off-season for one more chance.

The man does not change. No matter who our players are he plays ISO ball. No matter how we get torched on the 3 he runs that switching defense with the center trapping and teams that can rotate the ball and shoot kill us. He knows one way and that’s it.

Writing was on the wall last year after the Kennesaw loss

Writing is on the wall this year after struggling to win vs Lehigh / American and losing big to CCSU

Could not understand how / why we rarely took the ball inside and kept settling for outside shots.

Look at this roster and ask yourself how many of these guys would play meaningful minutes for other P5 squads.

We have too many players who would be backups on most squads playing too many meaningful minutes.

Pike has this and next year to right the ship or show significant improvement otherwise Zinn will need to make the necessary change

Pikiell cannot compete in the new world of revenue sharing and NIL. He will not get fired this season or next due to the buyout. After that all bets are off. He should retire now to preserve the last bits of his dignity and give Zinn a chance to hire a coach that can make Rutgers competitive in the B1G.
In a perfect world, this would happen. But Pike's not giving up all that money to save his reputation, and I doubt any of us would. Given the reality that we can't afford to fire him, our best hope is that Zinn is a master fundraiser and can help Pike get the roster he needs to suit his coaching style and be competitive. Iowa State had 2 wins one year and was in the NCAA Tournament the following year, thanks to NIL. Maybe Zinn can make that happen, but we know the more probable outcome means we're hosed for a while.

They also poached TJ Otzelberger from UNLV who was a scorching hot mid major coach at the time to rouse some confidence and optimism

trying to find people to invest in a program with a year 11 coach coming off a single digit win season is probably near impossible given we can’t find people to donate when we’re winning …

Well that is a hell of a statement . I will give you we will not win many games if Dylan scores 6 points and has 4 rebounds. He was off tonight and I am looking at Pike . Pike does the same ******** he did last year and makes subs after the first timeout . He does it randomly with no purpose . Incredibly Dylan Grant and Manny are the first subs. Then Dylan has to come back in under 10 minutes and take over. Pike has done more to slow Dylan down and to force him to start and stop for no reason. He isn’t in foul trouble so no need to sub for extended periods and definitely not at the under 16 timeout . I truly believe his bringing him in and out all night contributed to him being off . Dylan has shot almost 10 foul shots a game and tonight only 2. You must get him the ball at the foul line extended and let him drive .
what exactly will he be exposed ? Guaranteed he will be our leading scorer in almost every BiG 10 game . Tonite was an outlier for Dylan. You shitting on him is disgusting
His substitutions have always been terrible
These guys are 20 years old they get a 3 minute rest every 4 minutes of game time your best player(s) should be playing 36 minutes per game especially on a roster so devoid of talent

That's why Zinn has to go after corporations more so than fans. Zinn will have to show that even though the team stinks, there are still a lot of people that pay attention. Therefore, there could be value to a corporation if it invests in the program. Maybe selling ice to an Eskimo would be easier, but that's why she's paid the big bucks.

Stop - you want to say that Pike is not a coach built for NIL era coaching or that he's sitting at the poker table with less chips than anybody else that's one thing. Pike's game was to bring in devalued stock and to develop them over time within his program. We are not playing in that landscape anymore - he is a dinosaur in today's game where his method is no longer valid.

Saying that they have no idea who is or is not ready - yeah, I'm not on board with that. H was pretty good at this coaching thing a few years ago for what we were - it just no longer works in today's game.
Was he good when he had the talent last year? He went way too long with Paul Malcuhahey and cost us a tournament bid. If not for Caleb calling him out in a presser then he doesn’t move him off the ball.

Pike can get the most out of undervalued kids but he can not coach at this level. I understand the love for him with his early success but his coaching cost us the ncaa against Houston. His stubborn attitude lost the ND game .

Agreed NO ONE is investing in Pike! NO ONR is investing in Greg! If you want to be serious in raising money you have to hire someone “Corporate” can get behind and benefit from.

Both coaches MUST go if we are serious about raising money and competing.

You have a loser mentally, hopefully Keli doesn’t either
I can sell ICE to esikmos but a great sales person knows how to present and position its product! You can keep trying to sell Polarid Film (Our out dated coaches). Or bring him the new IPhone 17 to create a competitive advantage. Why do you think successful companies have annual upgrades and roll outs!

What is the selling point on Pike now that gets someone jazzed up to sign over millions to spend on a roster

GS has done a job of selling himself to win 6-7 games so oddly enough an easier sell than pike who has shown maybe less ability than any power conference coach to adapt to NIL

pike is dead man walking ! He is a Kodak camera. He had Ace and Dylan and embarrassed himself. Fanatics is never sending anyone to Pike again.

What is the sealed pitch for Pike?
If he had better players he would win? Nope!

You can try and sell the New GM cleaning up Pikes inability to evaluate talent. You can force Pikes to fire 2 assistants and bring in offensive replacements.

At the end of the day Pike dug his grave

1. This game is the culmination of everything we feared about this team. There’s not a consistent “scorer” that we can lean on, not enough shooters, and we’re terrible at the rim. This is just a bad offensive team. B-A-D.

2. What I didn’t expect, though, is the poor defense we’ve seen in all five of these games. We don’t turn over the other team (only 7 against American, and 7 against CCSU), and these teams have been shooting the lights out from deep. CCSU ran pick and roll all night, and they were able to create multiple options out of that set. They had multiple lobs to the screener, or the ball handler got an open midrange, or he sprayed out to an open shooter. We never really figured it out.

3. We didn’t reach 60 points. We cut it to 50-47 but then went ice cold, and CCSU outscored us 17-7 down the stretch. This is against an NEC team. That is scary to think about. Throttled 67-54 on our home court, and CCSU punking us with an alleyoop in the last minute.

4. Dylan Grant had a bad night (6 points on 2-10 from the field), and this game showed Grant’s limitations a bit. He’s good attacking the rim. He’s good at spot up threes. But he’s not good shooting on the move or creating space to give himself shots. Also a bad night for JMike, his first real stinker this year with just 2 points (1-6) and 3 assists.

5. After scoring 15 points in the first half, Tariq Francis disappeared and only scored 4 points the rest of the way. But he was still our leading scorer with 19, as nobody else was able to score.

6. Good move by Pike with the Dortch and The Four Freshmen lineup in the second half after we fell behind by 12. That group brought energy with the full court press and sparked a run that eventually got us back in the game. But we petered out after we brought the starters back in.

7. More bad offense notes — We shot just 21-58 overall (36%), and just 5-19 from deep (26%). We must’ve missed 20 shots at the rim. NOTHING was falling. CCSU ran better sets with the constant motion, down screens, back screens, pick and roll etc, and they have more skilled offensive players than we do. Scary to think about.

8. Another night where we lost at the 3pt line … by a LOT. CCSU was 9-21 from deep. We were also outrebounded 41-37.

9. Freshman report — another so-so game for Badalau with 11 points. But perplexing that Pike is allowing him to play iso ball in an effort to generate his own shot. That’s not his game, as he’s not athletic enough, and he got his shot blocked at least twice. We got energy and defense from Nwuli and Mark in the 2nd half, but not much else. And we got nothing whatsoever from Zrno in 4 first half minutes, or from Kaden Powers in 4 second half minutes (0-3 from the field).

10. Manny Ogbole had another pretty good night with 6 points (3-3), 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 1 steal.

11. I know, I know, none of this really matters because we’re going to stink so bad, etc. I get it. But I’m still going to do these Rapid Reactions until the season is truly lost.
I think after the next five games, the season will be totally lost.

SAMCO isn't selling businesses on Pike, they're selling the businesses on the eyeballs Rutgers brings in, the average income of the average fan, what their interests are, etc.

It was a mess. Nothing good to say. They were settling for shots and not getting to the basket. Grant was timid and the whole team played afraid. Central Connecticut played aggressive and wanted it.

How is SAMCO doing?

They had a booth on the boardwalk, the only place on the boardwalk with no line, so I went in to chat. It was staffed by one person - SAMCO intern. Hopefully the reason was the SAMCO bosses were too busy at the stadium pitching big potential donors.

Rutgers athletics already has big time corporate sponsors - led by multibillion dollar, multinational companies based in New Jersey.

Jersey Mike's has the naming rights deal for the former Rutgers Athletic Center. Pays $1.2 million this year.

SHI has the naming rights deal for the former Rutgers Stadium. Pays $1.9 million this year.

Prudential, $1.6 trillion of assets and Funds Rutgers NIL. The amount is unknown but doesn't seem to be making a difference when observing sporting results.

At the same time, the state of New Jersey and Rutgers University hooked up the Rutgers athletics department with subsidies totalling $29 million in 2024 and $26 million in 2023. Note most B1G athletic departments, plus LSU, receive $0 from state and university handouts.

If Rutgers athletics received $3 million combined for naming rights at the two biggest sports venues on campus, versus nearly 10x that in subsidies, Keli's focus must involve growing the subsidies because the corporate support has been maxed out.

The lack of talent is obvious even against mediocre opponents. What is more disturbing is the coaching stafff inabiliry to teach a half court offense with ball movement and pick and rolls to create open shots. from the corners and dribble drives to the basket.Iso offense is meant for players like Bailey and Harper who are NBA players. There must be changes in the coaching staff next season because staying with the status quo will just result in more embarrassment.Losing at home by 13 points to a team with a 303 ranking is unacceptable.

Settle on a buyout, FIND THE MONEY, and move on. There's a hundred better coaches out there. Live with limited NIL for a year. Maybe the new coach even brings some players with him. Put whatever money we raise for the BB program towards a buyout and a new coach. That's where our biggest problem lies. Pike seems like a sensitive guy. I think if he realizes he is no longer wanted he might accept a buyout and attempt to start all over. After all, he doesn't seem to be enjoying this, and he is probably well off financially. Plus, let's say he loses 8 million dollars in an accepted buyout, with a new job at a lower level he will almost certainly make that up in the next 5-6 years. Start working on it Kelli.

There is one huge positive from this game.

All the guys who think they are smarter than the coach can bloviate to their hearts content on how the coach must be the stupidest one ever.

Undoubtedly, I am the most unpopular poster here, because I do not take this stuff that seriously.

Either our coach will figure it out or he will be gone in a season or two. I am not going to get into denigrating everything about the man or his staff - not my bag.

He has done a fantastic job of developing some guys who others saw as limited in potential in the past, so I can hope he does that again. If he does, I will enjoy the season. If not, it will be a very long season and an even longer off-season IMO. But the program will move on. I am optimistic the new AD will figure things out, but my optimism is clearly off the charts compared to the average poster on this board.

Great summary of the game. Maybe Rutgers is really this bad, maybe their heads were already in Las Vegas. Defensively, Rutgers needs work, especially defending the 3. Offensively, this was pretty horrific. If we played the other games this badly, I would agree our season is doomed.

However, we didn’t. Against Rider we shot overall 39%, but we made 10 threes shooting at 37%. Against Lehigh we shot only 23% from 3, but shot 51% overall. Against Maine we shot pretty good overall 46%, but were great from 3 at 42%. Against American we shot 47% overall and 40 % from 3. Against CC we shot 36% overall and 26% from 3. Does this mean we will be horrendous going forward because we didn’t come out ready to play against CC. We might, but I don’t think so.

Did this team look past Central Connecticut. I think they did, which unfortunately puts more pressure on them as they face a stretch of 5 almost impossible games. It also lends support to a fan base that was not high on this team or the coach because of how far the team was from the lofty expectations. This was a game that this team was expected to win and they didn’t. Instead they collapsed in the last 6 minutes.

All that being said, I don’t know what I will see this coming week. A team that will get pounded or one that will get back up and fight.

Nothwithstanding how horrible this loss was, there were a couple of things I liked. Ogbole looks great rebounding, blocking shots and shooting. He started 0-5, but since has been 15 of 17. If he could only catch the ball better and hit free throws. Francis is really hitting free throws 14 of 15 for 93%. The freshman really gave the team a lift when they came in especially Badalau the lone freshman starter and Mark 2 of 4 off the bench along with Nwuli and Powers.

Two negatives about the freshman, Badalau should not try to shoot turnaround jumpers both were blocked and the way he did them if he did a dozen than a dozen would be blocked. Powers missed all his shots and is now 0-6 for the season.

Very disappointing game and the next five games may be nightmarish, but this team has talent and if they stay healthy and play hard, they can do much better than expected and still be a lot of fun to watch.

The next 5 are not impossible as you say. Notre Dame is our second game and they are no juggernaut. We do not know the third game opponent but likely an 0-2 team so they are beatable. Tennessee , Purdue and Michigan are highly ranked teams and most teams would have problems with them. Granted , it doesn’t look good now but there is time but Pike has to stop with the ridiculous sub patterns and let your best players play. Make sure they get the ball in their spots , move the ball, stop over dribbling , drive and get fouled and rebound. Stop other teams from hitting threes by actually guarding them. Stop leaving guys open. You take away the three against every team you have a chance.
