Nobody is disputing that Rutgers is in the tournament or not. This counts as being in the tournament. But it is still a play-in game. They need to win to get into the field of 64 like everyone else

Except 64 to 32, and so on and so on, there are not teams that have to play an extra game to get to The Round of 32, Sweet 16 and so on.

Personally I think a 68 team bracket is kinda dumb but it’s what we have and we are in it. It’s no more a “play-in” game than the round of 64 is.

It is a wild card game. Those are still playoffs in football.
If all 8 teams in the First Four were 16 seeds, than maybe you could call it a play-in game.
But there are 11 and 12 seeds playing, and ncaa.com calls it the First Four.
