I don't think that's accurate. We were still playing some 5-2 when our defense was sucking against the sped teams. Osborne forced a change to the 4-3. Nobody went from being ready to be fired to genius faster than McBride.

This is true, but after the switch we struggled because we just didn't have the speed. After fsu coaches taught our coaches the 4-3 and that we needed speed speed speed, we had 2 choices. Either make the switch immediately or try recruiting speed first while still running 5-2 base. We switched and tried to run 4-3 with mostly 5-2 personnel for a couple years. Pretty ugly until we got the horses we needed
