@bobby deren takes a closer look at why Raheem Blackshear will play a bigger role moving forward. Here is his story.
The best is when Rutger's Rivals board posters claimed Blackshear as being small...hell Ray Rice as a frosh was not much beyond 5'7" ...185 ibs...but like Ray Rice , Blackshear has more speed , twitch and just maybe an undeniable burst of power in his body...if he works hard and stays healthy he 'll be like Jackson from Northwestern soon ...I would compare him to Ray but that would not be fair to either of them...just be Raheem.

Ray Rice was bigger than Blackshear. And he was never 5’7. Blackshear isn’t tiny but he’s not built like Ray Rice. Ray Rice has trea trunk legs. Blackshear is more LaMichael James or one of those Oregon backs. CJ Spiller. That’s not bad company. Wadley from Iowa runs like that too. He wrecked us last year.

yeah, I don't think he was ever that tall either...

I did not think his running style was reminiscent of ray rice at all. We really have tremendous depth at rb this year. Too bad 75% of it graduates this year as well.

Hopefully Sneed comes back ready to go. But 4 rb's, when healthy, is too many. So I'm not that concerned about the graduating guys.

Ray Rice was bigger than Blackshear.

Ray Rice's Rivals profile out of HS had him listed at 5-9, 188. As a sophomore in 2006, he was 195.

Blackshear is listed on sk.com at 5-9, 185 and Kill is saying he's now 190. That's pretty much the same size as Ray.

Rice and Blackshear are built nothing alike. Rice was a ******** brickhouse.

Ray Rice as a sophomore:

Blackshear as a freshman:

Ray's a little thicker in the chest, but they're not dramatically different in size.

I don't care what they were listed as. You can't tell me that's the same body type.

Look at their legs. Ray Rice has tree trunk legs. Blackshear has thinner legs. Ray Rice's arms and upper body are bigger too. I see Ray Rice being a lot thicker. I honestly don't know what you're seeing. It's not even close in my opinion.

NFL Ray Rice was much bigger than Rutgers freshman Ray Rice. There aren't a lot of pictures from back then, because he wasn't the breakout star yet - but look at his arms in a New Rochelle uniform. He built himself up over time in the weight room, as Blackshear will.

Ray's trunk was a bit wider, and his shoulders were a bit broader. We'll see what Blackshear looks like next year with another year of S&C in the offseason.

I loved watching him run on Illinois. You can tell he's got a special kind of skill.

I remember being at the signing day presser the year Rice signed and listening to Schiano talk up Ray Rice and how everyone was going to be amazed at what he would achieve. I think we're going to see amazing things from Blackshear, as well.

He'll never be built like Ray Rice. They are just different body types. Blackshear will always be a third down scat back. Ray Rice was a thick bowling ball. That's not Blackshear's game. And he's taller than Ray Rice. Ray Rice was 5'8.

Here's a shot of Ray from 2005. Can't embed it, unfortunately. His legs in that shot aren't what they'd become as a junior or as a pro.

If Blackshear gets up to around 195-200 pounds by next year, he could very easily find himself as a feature back in a thinned field (Martin, Hicks, Edwards graduating).

Sorry madchuck: Ray Rice was max 5'8" ...How do I know this ? ...my wife and I chatted with Ray standing face to face inside the stadium...my wife was 5'7" in 2005 and so was Rice...Ray was eyeball to eyeball and the same height...the summer he arrived Ray was 185-190 lbs ... solid ...his legs were like tree trunks that is factual... his soph year Ray was around 205....Blackshear will be similar to J.Jackson at Northwestern and I'll take that anytime...Blackshear has better twitch than even Rice had... his vision is above average...Rice is 5'9" now and was at 212 lbs at the end...

Blackshear will be good. I agree, Ray Rice was shorter than 5'9 with tree trunk legs. But Blackshear and Ray Rice have nothing in common. Their games do not resemble each other. Blackshear does have more twitch. The only thing Blackshear and Rice have in common is they play the same position. Blackshear is faster. Rice stronger. Blackshear aint carrying the ball 35 times a game or whatever Schiano was giving Rice. But I agree he will be very good and can probably even be an every down back. He's just not Ray Rice. I'm not even saying he can't be that good but they are just so drastically different.

The running style as a whole no he seems more like a Tony Dorset type runner to me but that one open field cut he made for the TD did remind me of the way ray rice used to be able to cut like that Right in stride and not loose a step.

I don’t know why anyone is comparing the two of them. Only back I knew with thicker legs then RR was M.J. Drew. Blackshear is more like a Slaton.
Ray was all about a low center of gravity and Blackshear seems to be more twitch and speed.

I agree with you on Rice being clearly stronger than Blackshear (that stiff arm as a soph on Selvie should settle that) but let's not casually declare Blackshear as faster than Ray.

One - I've never seen a faster rb from 0 to top speed. Believe he was #1 shuttle time as a recruit at some national Nike camp.

And people think his top end speed wasn't that great because he got caught by Revis once. Google his run first play against the Pats in that wild card game.

If Blackshear can ever do something like that we will all be thrilled.

Honestly, I just think it's a horrible comparison. Blackshear is a good player but Ray Rice is the 1%. He was the best player in school history. Blackshear is good but he broke runs on the worst MEAC team ever and one of the worst P5 defenses in the country. Comparing him to the best player in school history is a little premature. Again, Blackshear is good. But I don't see Ray Rice in him at all. It's just a different player.

I have been very impressed so with Blackshear thus far. If you want to compare Rice to him, at least find pictures of the same year. Find a freshman RR or wait for Blackshear next year to compare. That being said, look at the photos above. If you attached Rice's arms on Blackshear's lower body, he would be under suspicion for using steroids.

Like Blackshear. Obviously we need another back next year to take half the load. Sneed has disappeared.

Sneed redshirted. Blackshear will start next year. A grad transfer or another grad transfer will provide depth. However, RB is a position where young guys can play right away and be sucessful. So Pacheco could probably see significant carries.

My oldest daughter is 5'8". She has pictures with Ray Rice. She is noticeably taller than him.

Rice was not that tall but he was bigger than Blackshear. Rice went about 195 when he was playing for us. Might have put on a few more pounds with the Ravens.
