R.I.P., Paul Hornung...

Former Notre Dame QB Paul Hornung, who was the only Heisman Trophy winner to play on a losing team, passed away today. He was 84.— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) November 13, 2020

I remember him from that Saturday night football show on TBS. I just remember the only live highlights they seem to have were from Baton Rouge.

He worked with Jim Taylor on LSU's pay-per-view TigerVision broadcasts so that could have had something to do with that.

Wasn’t he on MNF a year or so?

The Lombardi Sweep......it was a thing of beauty

John Madden once talked about the football clinic Vince Lombardi held

His topic was "The Packer Sweep". Madden thought to himself, "Geez, this won't last long." Turns out, Lombardi used the full 8 hours going over every possible scenario.

At the end of the clinic, Madden realized he knew very little as a coach.

Hornung wasn't the most talented running back in the NFL. He wasn't even...

...the best running back on his team (Jim Taylor). However, if the Packers needed yardage to get a first down or a game-winning touchdown, he always got it.

He was also placekicker for several years. Once scored 176 points in a season- a 12 game season. It wasn't broken until Ladanian Tomlinson passed it in 2006, and he had 16 games to complete it.

He didn't make the Hall of Fame until 1986 because he was suspended the 1963 season for gambling (along with Alex Karras of the Detroit Lions).
