Saw him at the Cow Barn in about 74 or 75. Stoned so bad he had trouble staying on a stool and talking. Still a good show but mostly remember it because of how obviously messed up he was. Enjoy his music still.

JJW will be missed. Not as mainstream as some of the others there, but he was as important as anyone in creating the outlier country/cosmic cowboy sound of the Early 70's that changed music forever.

Long but great article from about 10 years ago.

Progressive country.

Could not wait until Austin City Limits came on....ACL has fallen very far since "home with the Armadillo" days.

A bunch of us went from Starkville to Oxford to see him in 75 or 76. His opening act was some unknown guy named Buffett!

Having hitch hiked across Texas in 1972, I always appreciated his pronouncement that "If you didn't have to go across Texas to get there, every freak in America would live in Austin."

Anyone besides me glance quickly at the subject line of this one and think it was about the bad *** punter we had in the late 90's?

Between Hank Williams' pain songs, and Jerry Jeff's train songs, and Blue Eyes Cryin' In the Rain,
Out in Luckenbach Texas, ain't nobody feelin' no pain.

While on vacation this summer we got drunk off diet beer at the beach and then moved to “Wild Turkey Liquor” while listening to JJW that night. We spent the evening “kicking hippy asses and raising hell.”
Man that Turkey has a bite! RIP JJW!

Got to see him live in the early 80's in west Texas at the Wick Fowler World Championship Chili cookoff in Terlingua, Tx. Great concert. Great weekend. RIP JJW.

I believe that was Jeff Walker, and he loved to lay a lick. Younger folks who never got into Outlaw Country or never hung out in beer joints or truck stops maybe never heard of Jerry Jeff.
