From the above article:

”West is the sixth former Phillie to die of brain cancer since 2003 following Ken Brett (2003), Tug McGraw (2004), Johnny Oates (2004), John Vukovich (2007), and Darren Daulton (2017).”

So sad.

He passed away from brain cancer. He’s like the 6th or 7th Phillies player of that era to die from brain cancer.

Weird. I played for a team back home where there were a handful of guys that died from brain cancer at young ages. I always wonder if the old galvanized bucket we drank water from caused it.

There are some theories out there that the artificial turf at the Vet during that time period may have emitted some cancerous causing contaminants. Not sure if there’s any truth to it or any way to prove or disprove it at this point. Regardless, it’s sad that all these guys lost their life way to early.

Does make one wonder if there's a connection somewhere. But there's really no way of proving that.

I believe that Gary Carter played more visiting games at the Vet than any other player. Same disease for Cater.
some speculation there, but others have said perhaps its the radar guns. If it were the Vet, would the position players be subject to this as well??

If it were the radar guns, one would expect that it wouldn’t be Vet Stadium specific.

What’s the denominator? In other words what is the rate for Phils compared to the rate in the gen pop?

There are several different types of brain cancer. If all those who died had the same type of brain cancer, then that would be serious indicator of a potentially common cause. What is suspicious is that, other than Vuk, they are all pitchers/catchers but, with the layout at the Vet, it wouldn't seem likely that the Astro Turf would've played a role.

All good points and I was just relaying a rumor that I had heard. To your post, maybe it is possible that the offending area was the bullpen, since only the pitchers and catchers seem to have been affected?

I remember a similar situation with old Giants Stadium with players getting cancer.

Did any Eagles players from the same era develop similar diseases ?

RIP David West.
