A caller on KSR alluded to it this morning, but you can’t deny the fact of the timing. Go back to January 5th, we played a pretty good, tough game against Vanderbilt and appeared to possibly have turned the corner. Then we roll into Florida and curb stomp them to the tune of a 20 point victory and all of BBN is feeling great.

Then we find out they knelt. And everything has gone downhill since. Whether you agree or disagree with the act itself, you have to wonder if the backlash from the fans hasn’t caused this whole debacle.

I don't agree with it either, but in what world did they expect to get anything other than backlash?

They can say it isn't meant to divide and that its about police brutality. OK, well to us its disrespectful regardless of what the purpose is. Theres a time and place for that stuff and sporting events isn't it. They say "how else can we get you to listen?" All you're doing is causing more people to turn you off, and when they go so does the money train. Without fans, sports is not a financially viable career for most people. Just ask female athletes.

Let's take a Confederate flag. Some idiots use it for a symbol of white supremacy. But some do just use it as a symbol of bring a proud Southerner. The two have been conflated now, for obvious reasons.. My point is for some people it really is about heritage not hate. BUT, no one would sit there and get up in arms and taken aback if someone wore one into a group of black folks and act clueless as to why they're mad, or make statements acting like they didn't think it would be divisive or offensive. How aloof and oblivious can they be?

Not only the players, but I think it has affected Cal even more. He didn’t realize just how crazy we are. Lol

I refuse to believe a majority of UK fans were offended by a team kneeling as an act of solidarity. I don’t buy it. Good opportunity for racists to come out of their woodshed though

You people saying no, are you sure you’re not just trying to convince yourself that there is no way that has any effect because you don’t agree with what they did and you are one that lashed out?

Yarrr! Except no flag was disrespected and what’s really disrespect to the flag is using it as an excuse to ignore racism and capitol storming. Sad!

No one is ignoring either. Racism is all anyone talks about anymore. Of course we cant fix "systemic" racism that can't be defined and isn't real...

The outrage over the capital storming is beyond hilarious from people like you. You supported rioting, looting, and killing almost all year, and now you're upset over one event? You'd have more credibility if you were against all riots no matter the cause.

I’d like to see how many fans agree (or don’t have a problem) with the kneeling, and also think it had 0 to do with the poor play since. Bet it’s very low.

Brooks lead the way with the kneeling, which of course came after he defamed Rupp and said they should change the name of the arena because of his first name. Went on the totally blow his wad against UF and has been awful ever since.

The fans found out about it after the Florida game and everything has changed for the worse since. In a bad, bad way.
Wait..... we were 3-6 before that game. Are you suggesting that things are worse now? Because I'm not gonna buy the argument that we were a great team before the backlash.

The fact of the matter is this team has been horribly coached all year long in almost ever facet from individual improvement to overall scheme and philosophy.

I'm not sure how it's affecting them. We were 1-6. We won a couple games. And now we're losing again. At our best point, we were 4-6. We're not a good basketball team.

But sure, it was the act of kneeling.

"Any" effect is a broad term. Could it have created disappointment among the players? Sure. Did it cause utter collapse that resulted in the putrid play that we are currently witnessing? No...that's quite a stretch. However, some will push that narrative because they're either wrapped up in the current political environment or it deflects blame from the coaches and players.

Who knows if it's a majority of UK fans or not. But, to a lot of white people who have heard the message loud and clear, that we need to do a better job, we get it. I watch sports in general as a diversion, to get away from the real world even if only for a short time. Same with movies. I'm not interested in politics being combined with what is supposed to be an escape for me. As a fan, I'm entirely justified in not watching this team for whatever reason I see fit.

There are lots of fans who have family members or they themselves have been in the military, served this country, and have a great love for it and are proud of it. If they see someone kneeling during the playing of the national anthem and they feel that it is disrespectful, that's their prerogative. They have a different perspective than someone who has never served or defended the rights and freedoms that others enjoy. I hardly think that makes them racist.

I actually think both are true. We obviously aren’t very good. It probably did shock them how backwards some fans are. Did it have impact on performance? Who knows.

But it certainly changed my perception of our fanbase and makes you question if these are the people you want to be known by. So, it wouldn’t shock me.

I’m pretty sure. Doesn’t bother me that they did it. I wouldn’t do it personally, but couldn’t care less that they chose to do that. It is, after all, the freedom to do **** like that that our military has fought and died for. But to think that has caused this team to suck is weird. Poor recruiting, poor coaching, no skill, coach with ego, youth, turnovers, yada yada, there are tons of reasons. None of them are taking a knee. They sucked before that. Just my take.

It’s laughable. I can’t take it seriously. It’s like you’re forcing people to explain that standing is just a custom, carrying no inherent value, and that kneeling was simply a way of showing solidarity. But no, you choose to change the subject matter and you choose to be offended. And the goal is to promote your political ideology rather than just admit black people have had a tough go in America.

Also, this thread should be locked or deleted, only serves to do one thing. No offense OP, don’t think you actually meant it that way, but that’s the way it goes.

No, what's laughable is 20000+ posts and only a handful of likes. That's an indication of someone with a lot to say that no one really cares about or agrees with.

I will never understand the obsession with the Confederate flag. They seceded, they lost, and that flag, in addition to “heritage”, represents a time when black people were not treated as humans. It’s no different to an old German person today proudly who grew up in the 30s proudly displaying a nazi flag.
