Another loss for us to Nova in recruiting :(, I think this is a good spot for him though. And I don't hate nova like the Duke/Kentucky's of the world

No surprise at all and a big win for Villanova in their tradition of having star backcourt players.

Jay Young is a great coach. Quinerly will do well there.

Shoot, I meant Jay Wright.

Kidding aside, it is intriguing to watch Villanova during time outs. They watch their coach every second, and seem to have the highest level of respect for the guy. Hard not to root for Villanova. Especially since they are always good for a win against Seton Hall.

They're going to be really good next year even if Brunson goes pro (Bridges is certainly gone). Quinerly, Spellman, DiVincenzo, Booth, Paschall is a great lineup, plus Gillespie and two other freshman, both 4*, in Slater and Swider.

There's not a better situation in the country a freshman PG could step into than that one.

Not really a loss for us. He was never coming here. Good pick up for them.

Wright is one of the best, and maybe the classiest coach in college basketball. Those collar up douchbags at Nova don’t deserve him.

Their basketball program certainly has a great thing going. These are their glory days no doubt.

I've been to my friends parties where Jay Wright has attended. When he walks in a room he has a presence about him that draws you to him. Real good guy and treats my friend who is on his staff extremely well.

Good stuff. I have never seen a coach command attention like he does.

Especially in today's game where the majority of coaches are players coaches, and let their players do whatever they want.

Izzo is the same way at MSU, the players look him right in the eye when he speaks.

Can we get Diego Willis, should we?

Is Quinerly's uncle or advisor getting a job on the Villanova staff? Any NCAA sanctions on Quinerly?

Not true. He was ready to sign at RU until Nova called when they realized he was heading our way

Is true. Mulchahy didn’t fire bannon as the season was over. He waited too long. Should have moved sooner on it and made the play for wright

Umm, not true. I actually had a 2 hour conversation with Jay Wright's wife last summer, they have a house here in Ocean City. She told me they were ready to move to NJ, they even told their kids they could get a dog since they had to leave their friends. He was basically about to sign when Nova called, which was his dream job. The only reason Nova acted was because they knew he was going to go to RU. Lappas was 18-13 his last year, but had not made the NCAA the last 2 years and it seemed like he was trending down. They quickly fired him and hired Wright only because they didn't want him going to RU.

Even if Wright has come here, all he needed was a phone call from Nova and he was off.

That being said, we can’t compete against Nova for recruits. For obvious reasons.

I had dvr'd the RU/Nova game that we came from behind and won on the four point play..... it was an
incredible finish, one of the two best finishes I can
remember for RU

anyway,
one thing that impressed me about Wright, during our comeback in that game, was that he seemingly applauded a few of our shots, and seemed to be saying "big time" right afterwards...almost like a fan who enjoyed the effort of both teams...

I wonder if we had landed him, kept him, where we would be right now.... I cannot hate Jay because he seemed to be an ok guy that day

I hear ya. I became an RU fan in 2011, so I was not around for a lot of the big east battles. Sounds enjoyable, though!

That is pretty unique. I believe the program is in a good spot right now. One to two shooters away of a night in, night out competitive team.

Thiam, Omoyuri, Baker. If Sanders stays, the team can put together some classic wins against big time opponents.

What are you missing ? Mulchahy moved too slow . He could have fired bannon like 2 weeks before he did and offfeed Wright then. Villanova’a season was still going on and Lappas not canned yet .

As far as I know the answer to your first question is no. As for the second question, we won't know until JQ signs financial aid paperwork or a NLI. At that point the NCAA Eligibility Center will begin its review.

I hear what you are saying but I dont think it would have mattered. Nova reacted to us hiring Wright, if we moved 2 weeks earlier, so would they have. I dont think they would have kept Lappas just to coach the NIT games. He was their man and they were going to get him.

You are probably right (wright)!

But mulchahy did botch the bannon and Waters firing . He also hired Fred hill junior as the head coach! The guy did great things for football , and now we are in the BIG but he basically killed off men’s hoops .

Without getting too detailed...BM hands were tied in when he could terminate KB. And I can’t and won’t elaborate any further

Ok, so assume mulchahy gets a pass for the timing of the firing . Take that out of the equation then . He still was awful as far as men’s basketball is concerned.

Hofstra was headed to the NCAA that year. Wright wasn't talking to anyone until the Hofstra season was over. Mulcahy could have fired Bannon in January and it Would not have mattered. Wright was not talking about his next job until March 14th 2001 (the day after Hofstra was eliminated from the NCAA tournament). And he talked to us immediately thereafter.

The only way RU gets Wright in 2001 is if Nova decided to hang on to Lappas for another year. Mulcahy identified the correct HC in Wright. Unfortunately Wright preferred Nova over RU.

Showing your age here.

A lot of us despise THE NOVA.
Yup...after JW's shoddy handling of the opportunity to elevate us to our rightful place in the eastern hierarchy building on the 70s-80s to a small city parochial....."ouch"..I haven't recovered yet !! Hopefully Pike has us back on track to yearly dancing..at least.

You are probably right (Wright)! But mulchahy didn’t put us in the best position for success .
And like I posted earlier even if you give him a pass for this , he was awful for men’s basketball.

Villanova lost to Minnesota in the NIT on March 14, 2001 and announced the hiring of Jay Wright on March 27th.

Seems like a big gap. Not sure when Hofstra season ended. But we are rutgers and doomed to mess it up or luck go against us somehow.

Excellent article on espn.com regarding how wright made changes in his approach about 5 years ago that has lead to this recent run of excellence. Would be nice if Pile could emulate some of that.

I do think that him going back on quinerly is a little uncharacteristic. Must believe the kid was not on the take.

Was told by a former coworker who played at Nova and is very active within their booster club that the Admin didn't want the kid but Jay Wright did and the HC won on this one .
