1.We have really struggled to guard the 3 point shooter on the baseline.
It seems like our defender is leaving to try to double the ball up top and (I'm guessing) it's the job of someone else (next closest) to rotate over to pick up the shooter on the 3 point baseline. Problem is that we are giving up wide open 3's from that spot. Jay Bilas mentioned something last nite about doubling the ball up high - but I've been seeing it all year. It seems like we are trying to trap too much and the good teams just torch it by passing out of it and finding open shooters.
2. Last night, when Huggs switched to the 1-3-1, it got torched. I thought maybe he stayed in it a bit too long (I think we gave up 3-4 straight baskets until he called TO and stopped the 1-3-1). We weren't in it long, but long enough to give up the rest of that lead. He had Chase playing down at the bottom. I know that we typically play a guard down low (for example, Mazzula used to play it). But, it seems like Chase would not be quick enough to play there? I dont remember seeing him play in that spot before. Would seem like Dax would be better fit there?
3. Aside from not being able to run offensive sets to get guys open, team's big problem is what happens when Sags is in foul trouble. We don't have an answer and get outrebounded big time. Loss of Elijah Macon early was huge. It was interesting that Huggs had Routt and Bender out at same time - I thought Routt did ok. But, huge difference compared to last year when we had Macon and sags.
Also, I don't know if it's lack of playing shape, but Esa is obviously struggling. Not just on offense- his lack of rebounding help and overall D last night was a disappointment. Our offense in crunch time is 4 guys standing around and JC dribbling it through his legs trying to hit a step back jumper with 2 defenders on him. Tough way to win games.
