Did we change the defense after they hit like 6 of 9 from 3 to start the game?

After that Purdue really beat us on penetration and was actually bad from 3.

Not being critical as I know you have to pick your poison against a team like Purdue just curious if the change was more to us changing D or Purdue changing O.

As I said in another thread we did not start out on defense with the same strategy we had when we played them at home; when we played them at home we didn't double the ball and we let Edey and Williams get theirs inside and we guarded the three; yesterday when the game started they had wide open looks from 3 and knocked them down; now once that hot period ended we stepped up our defense
One other thing which I can't understand for the life of me is he had RHJ on Ivey on a number of possessions and on two of those where he just blew by Ron Caleb got 2 fouls trying to come over and help
One other thing on defense yesterday is Cliff played his worst game in a while; completely out of position too many times and just getting beat to easily

we changed our defensive looks throughout the game, they killed us on 3s when we played zone and then they let ivey take his man 1 on 1 to the hoop when we played man, pikiell didnt make poor decisions but matt painter made better adjustments

The 4 areas to cover Purdue
1. Apply pressure on guards to make entry pass to 5 difficult
2. Defend the 3 point line with your life
3. Keep the 5 away from the paint
4. Stay in front of Ivey

How the F do you do all 4? That is why Mag was 1st perimeter off the bench.

Nothing to do with defensive strategy. We got caught in a screen or 2 , one of them a moving one , and Ivey penetrated and we helped and left guys open . Plus Williams hit a three and he hasn’t taken one all year I think . They came out red hot and one of Sasha’s 2 was banked in from distance and a bad angle. It is a tribute to us we overcame it all and we’re down 32-31 and 36-35 with 2:10 to go. We held them to 2 threes the remaining 35 minutes. When that happens we normally win. The last 2-3 minutes of the first half and the first 4-5 minutes of the second doomed us. Those 6-8 minutes cost us the game against a team that played their A game and played like a Final Four team . More positives than negatives to take out of yesterday.

I actually thought Mag did a very good job on Ivey when he guarded him

It really came down to them having a lottery pick that we really couldn’t keep up with.

Edey and Williams were also an issue.

It’s just one of those games where you need to acknowledge Purdue is just a very very talented and deep team.

You tip your hat, shake their hands, and move on to the next game.

FWIW I didn’t feel like RU played terribly. Purdue is just better.

as good as one can do against him. He is about as fast as you can be with the basketball. Similar to what we saw at the RAC I want to see how he helps a team in a close NCAA game that is played mostly in the half court.
If you watched his last 4 games before ours , you would have thought he was terrible. They had no legs left. Their site Gold and Black detailed this pre game and they got their first day off in 23 days and they all got refreshed. On heavy legs no way Edey and Williams shoot 10-14, especially with some of the shots Williams was hitting.

There is a reason Purdue has been ranked in the top ten all season..They have three players who probably will be playing in the NBA along with other complementary players that can score.

I am not 100% sold on Edey in the NBA yet. His offensive game is very limited except that he can hit 5' shots over everyone else. Not sure if he will have success if that is all he can bring to the NBA. As pointed out last night, he really does not jump for rebounds either. There will be 6'9" guys in the NBA that will snatch rebounds from him if he continues that. Unless he develops some new skills, I think his ceiling may be a career like Boban Marjanovic

Williams and Ivey on the other hand look to have a skills that will transfer to the NBA. I think we may hear about them for years to come.
